The week in brief

Good afternoon, Wrappers! Before we begin, a few housekeeping notes. This week’s Wrap will be an abbreviated one, as I’m heading out to celebrate my bachelor party this afternoon. That means–yep, you saw where this was going–I’ll be getting married next Friday, so there will be no Wrap email next Friday, October 20th (I know, I hear you softly weeping to yourself over there in the corner–sike!). I’ll be back at it the following week.

Speaking of our wedding, we’ll be getting married overlooking the James, and right now it’s kind of looking like a monstrous mud pit. Just look at this photo by Doug Orkeski taken recently. The same page has details on the voluntary water restrictions put in place by the City of Richmond, Chesterfield, and other localities that use the James as their primary source of water. It’s October, folks. This is the type of low water we typically see in the summer months, so it’s a bit alarming. It’s been a dry couple of months, but hopefully some rainfall is on the way.

The Richmond Folk Festival is this weekend, at that means you can expect tons of live folk music from around the world, along with great food, beer and wine, arts and crafts, and oh-so-much more. It’s the best damn festival in Richmond all year long, and if you don’t agree I’ll gladly refund your purchase price (it’s free; but hey donations are accepted and you should totally make a drop in the bucket). Here’s who to see and where to go during this immensely popular festival on the riverfront taking place on seven stages.

Are you an experienced tutor? Richmond Public Schools is looking for tutors to help kids struggling with reading, and the pay is pretty good. See if you qualify and how you can apply here.

Kool and the Gang is taking over Innsbrook After Hours for a New Year’s Eve show, the venue announced this week. Tickets go on sale Monday!

There’s a ton to catch up on the world of #rvadine. Get your Weekly Food News here! Curious what breweries are having events this weekend? Who’s got the freshest releases? Richard’s got the lowdown in his RVA Beer Explorer.

Five things to know

  1. The deadline to register to vote in the November elections is this coming Monday, October 16th. Here’s what you need to know.
  2. Over 90 headstones at a Henrico pet cemetery were damaged this past week; here’s what we know.
  3. President Barack Obama will be in town to stump for the Ralph Northam campaign next week.
  4. The owner of Buz & Ned’s Real Barbecue in Henrico says allegations that went viral, made by a customer on Facebook, are hogwash.
  5. Did you know there was an entire hotel dedicated to the Temperance Movement in Manchester at one time?

Giveaways

We’ve got a couple of cool Richmond Folk Festival giveaways today! First up is a copy of this year’s official poster, revealed last month at Glave Kocen Gallery. The second is a voucher good for an official festival T-shirt, hat, or poster. How can you win? Send me an email here and tell me which artist you’re most excited to see at this weekend’s Folk Fest, and I’ll choose two winners–one for the poster, another for the merch voucher. Good luck!

Until next time,
