McKesson Medical-Surgical is becoming Wellverse, keeping RVA headquarters
The Richmond-based medical distributor unveiled its new name Thursday, part of a planned split from McKesson Corporation that’s expected to end in an IPO.
One of Richmond’s largest healthcare employers is getting a new name. McKesson Medical-Surgical announced Thursday that it will become Wellverse as it moves toward operating as an independent company, with the switch expected to take effect in January 2027.
The company frames the name as a nod to what it does: pull the pieces of healthcare supply and support into one place. Wellverse, according to the announcement, is built around wellness, relationships, and existing capabilities, and is meant to give providers and their staff room to focus on patient care.
“This represents an important milestone in our journey toward becoming an independent company,” said Stanton McComb, president of McKesson Medical-Surgical. “The Wellverse name speaks to our purpose as a company: Delivering a future where healthcare providers and patients thrive.”
What the company actually does
The renamed business will keep doing what McKesson Medical-Surgical has done for years. It distributes medical products across non-acute care settings, which covers physician offices, surgery centers, long-term care providers, laboratories, home health and hospice agencies, health systems, government facilities, and online retailers. The company says it carries more than 270,000 national brand products alongside its own private-label McKesson Brands line, moved through a network of U.S. distribution centers.
Beyond the products themselves, the business sells distribution services, inventory and business management tools, and customer support. McComb pointed to the operational squeeze providers are under as the reasoning behind the rebrand.
“Healthcare providers are managing multiple vendors, operational challenges, and growing demands on their time,” he said. “With Wellverse, we aim to lighten that load by bringing the things they need into one place, so they can focus on what matters most: caring for patients and strengthening the health of their communities.”
The bigger corporate move
The rebrand isn’t happening in isolation. McKesson had already announced plans to separate its Medical-Surgical Solutions segment into a standalone company, part of a broader portfolio strategy the parent company says is meant to sharpen strategic focus for both businesses.
The timeline stretches well past the name change. An initial public offering is expected in the second half of calendar year 2027, subject to market conditions and regulatory approvals. Until the separation wraps up, McKesson Medical-Surgical continues to operate as part of McKesson Corporation.
For customers, the company says nothing changes. The transition won’t affect day-to-day operations, service levels, or existing relationships, and the name will roll out gradually across communications, systems, and customer touchpoints rather than flipping over on a single date. Customers, suppliers, and employees will get further updates as that rollout moves along.
Richmond has been home to McKesson Medical-Surgical’s headquarters for years, making it one of the region’s more significant corporate presences in healthcare. Whether the newly independent Wellverse stays anchored here after the separation is the question worth watching over the next 18 months.
