Weekly Food News: Patina closes, a Saint in the Devil’s Triangle, a new Carytown bar, and Cheetos Casserole
A long-time Short Pump restaurant is calling it quits, some Richmond bar scene all-stars are opening a new Carytown spot, some new life for an old Devil’s Triangle space, and details on some Supermarket Sweep action taking place Thursday for a good cause.
Patina calls it quits in Short Pump – Long-time Short Pump restaurant Patina Restaurant & Bar, a mainstay of the Wellesley neighborhood, has closed its doors, its owners announced in a Facebook post Tuesday evening, citing increasing competition from the ever-growing assortment of restaurants dotting the West End landscape. The neighborhood restaurant had undergone several ownership, menu, and chef changes over the past few years. Read on here.
Little Saint pulls into the Devil’s Triangle – A new restaurant from the folks behind Max’s On Broad and Tarrant’s Café has opened in the Devil’s Triangle area of the Museum District, filling the space left behind when DECO Ristorante closed its doors. It’s the first restaurant RVA Hospitality owner Frances Santarella has opened since taking over the company following the death of her husband Ted. More info on what to expect at the quaint spot right here.
Some of Richmond’s best bar talent opening bar in Carytown – A new late night bar is coming to Carytown, and it’s being led by some familiar names in the Richmond dining scene. The Jasper, as the concept will be known, will be located at 3113 W. Cary Street in the former Carey Burke Carpets space. The bar program will be headed by Mattias Hägglund of Heritage; Thomas Leggett, with The Roosevelt; and Kevin Liu of The Tin Pan, and will open the space later this year. Learn more about what to expect here.
Beauvine Burger Concept now open in former Bellytimber space – The owners of Bellytimber Tavern have swapped out those delicious pizzas for something different–burgers. Beauvine Burger Concept is now open in the Fan. All of the creatively-topped burgers are between eight and ten bucks, and yes–they still have chicken wings. Salt-brined, duck fat chicken wings, no less–which sound a lot like the recipe at sister restaurant En Su Boca–perhaps my favorite in town. Check out the full menu and learn more here.
I may be in too deep with tomorrow’s Supermarket Sweep – Tomorrow morning at 10:00 AM, I’m taking part in a Supermarket Sweep (remember that game show?) style competition against Roxie Bustamante from WRIC, Jake Burns from WTVR, FeedMore CEO Doug Pick, and even Nutzy from the Richmond Flying Squirrels. We’ll each have 60 seconds to grab as much non-perishable food as possible, all of which will be donated to FeedMore to help hungry families in our area. If you’re near the Kroger store at 3001 Polo Parkway, come watch the action. Y’all are all going down!
James Beard semi-finalist concocts Cheetos Casserole – Chef Lee Gregory, co-owner of The Roosevelt and Southbound, is well known for his sourcing of only the finest of local ingredients for his restaurants. But wouldn’t it be fun to see what he made of a challenge to create a dish using something cheap, processed, and full of artificial ingredients? Perhaps Cheetos. Well, that’s what Brandon Fox of Style Weekly decided to do, and the result was a, frankly pretty appetizing-looking, Cheetos Casserole. Here’s how it all went down.
