Weekly Food News: Elby nominations, Virginia’s best bagel, a delicious new ZZQ monstrosity, Thirsty’s opens, and more

Nate’s Bagels have been named the state’s best, two Jackson Ward spots are closed–one just temporarily, Forest Hill gets a taste of the Big Easy, and more.

All the news that’s fit to eat

The 2018 Elby nominations are out – Congratulations to all of this year’s Elby nominees! For the uninitiated, The Elbys are Richmond Magazine’s annual restaurant awards. This year, along with the typical categories like Best New Restaurant and Restaurant of the Year, new Global Dining Experience, and Richmond Regulars have been added. The winners will be announced at a ceremony at Main Street Station February 18th. See the nominees here.

ZZQ needs a name for its newest menu item that’ll wreck your guts – Scott’s Addition brisket and barbecue purveyors ZZQ have come up with a new, delicious monstrosity, and it needs a name! Layered with sliced “hot guts,” chopped brisket, pulled pork, sauce, and pickled onions, the beast clocks in at almost a pound of smoked meat perfection. The person whose name is chosen will get bragging rights, a $75 gift card, and a ZZQ T-shirt. By the way, ZZQ’s new digs next to Ardent in Scott’s Addition should be opening fairly soon. We’ll keep you updated! In the meantime, submit your entry by January 14th right here.

Nate’s Bagels takes best in state designation – I’m currently doing a modified Whole 30 type of deal, so the news that Nate’s Bagels have been name the best bagels in the great Commonwealth of Virginia and the knowlege that they’ll be served at a company meeting I’m speaking at on Friday is making me want them even more. Learn more about why the website Nosh says Nate’s are the best and read the fascinating profile Style Weekly’s Karen Newton wrote on owner Mathews–and his journey from landfill designer to bagel purveyor, here.

Forest Hill gets a taste of New Orleans with Thirsty’s – Forest Hill residents have a new option for lunch and dinner, not to mention cajun cuisine, with the opening of Thirsty’s on January 3rd. The new New Orleans-inspired spot takes over the former Kinsfolk spot, and our own Richard Hayes has a look inside along with the full menu for your perusing pleasure. Check it out here.

Rogue Gentlemen closed for the next week due to burst pipes – The bitterly cold weather and subsequent warmup has been wreaking havoc with pipes both inside buildings and underneath city streets this week. The Rogue Gentlemen in Jackson Ward was one such victim of this, and will be closed for the next week or so as they clean up from the damage. Best of luck to Johnny and the guys over there! More here.

Idle Hands’ Jackson Ward location shutters – The hands behind Idle Hands Bakery have gone idle, at least in Jackson Ward. Ownership says the location wasn’t as popular as their new Fan location and was spreading their staff too thin. The popular Fan location will remain, though. Here’s more straight from the horse’s mouth.
