Weekly Food News: Bike Restaurant Week, Toast heads to Powhatan, sweet treats galore, and more
Richmond is getting its own bike-centric Restaurant Week later this month, Toast pops up with a new spot in Powhatan, Camden’s temporarily ends dinner service, and there’s gelato and ice cream news galore.
All the news that’s fit to eat
Toast’s new Powhatan location pops up in Powhatan – Toast owners Josh and Jessica Bufford have opened a new location of their popular restaurant in the Village Shopping Center in Winterfield Plaza. That’s a permanent new location, mind you–I just couldn’t resist a toast pun. The new restaurant is just over the Chesterfield County line in eastern Powhatan, near Route 288. Expect to find a menu pretty similar to what you’ve come to expect at their first location with gastropub fare, seasonal specials, and more. Take a look at the full menu here.
Inaugural Bike Restaurant Week rolls into town September 17th through 21st – Richmond is really coming into its own as a bike-friendly city. First the UCI Road World Championships in 2015, then the ongoing addition of miles and miles of bike lanes, and finally our own bike share system. We have a ways to go, but we’re now bike-centric enough that we’re getting our own Restaurant Week based on biking! Organized by Bike Walk RVA–a bicycle advocacy group run by Sports Backers–the five-day Richmond Bike Restaurant Week event will offer up promotions encouraging patrons to bike to their next meal out at a variety of spots from coffee shops to dinner destinations. So far, 21 restaurants have signed on to the inaugural event. Learn more about participating restaurants and what deals you can score simply by riding your bike next time you go out to eat right here.
Camden’s Dogtown Market is down (a few staff members) but not out – Camden’s Dogtown Market in Manchester recently lost both their house manager and sous chef–for reasons unknown. They’re a fairly small operation, so the loss has clearly impacted their business decisions as they’ve chosen to temporarily close for dinner service for the forseeable future.
Gelati Celesti quadrupling size of production space with new facility – Local gelato purveyor Gelati Celesti is doubling down on Scott’s Addition. The business just opened a new retail location in the neighborhood and will follow that with a huge new production facility on N. Hamilton Street. BizSense has all the “cool” details.
North End Ice Cream serving up treats for any taste in the Museum District – Speaking of sweet treats, Richmond Magazine has a great interview with Channing Miller, owner of North End Juice Co., who just opened a neighboring–and might I say complementary–business, North End Ice Cream. The Museum District shop serves up everything form traditional gelato to frozen vegan treats. Get the tasty details from Genevelyn Steele right here.
