Weekly Food News: Tang & Biscuit nears opening, Galaxy Diner closes for repairs, a new ramen spot, and lots of taco news
A new ramen spot has opened in Carytown just as an established restaurant down the road closes for emergency repairs, Boka adds barbecue to the menu, Café Olé seeks a buyer, and more news this week.
All the news that’s fit to eat
Tang & Biscuit set to open this weekend in Scott’s Addition – A new shuffleboard bar and social club–billed as the largest in the world at 18,000 square feet–is set to open on W. Moore Street in Scott’s Addition this weekend. The venue, named for the equipment used to play the game, will feature an assortment of floor-based and tabletop shuffleboard courts and will have a full bar with some Tang-infused cocktails on the menu. Food-wise, you can expect sandwiches, wraps, open-faced biscuits (the kind you eat, mind you), salads, and more. Get caught up here.
Galaxy Diner in Carytown closed due to ceiling repairs – Sometimes when you start a project, you realize you’re dealing with something much bigger than expected. Kind of like when we deep-cleaned our house last weekend–but I digress. That was the case when contractors opened up a hole in the ceiling of Galaxy Diner in Carytown–the spot for comfort food including everyone’s favorite late-night Oreo-filled Black Hole Pancakes. The entire restaurant is closed this week while damage is assessed and things are cleaned up. See the mess here.
New ramen spot opens in former Best Friends Forever space – Right down the street from Galaxy, a new spot has taken over the former Best Friends Forever space. Hai Y’all, as it’s called, is a ramen joint serving up noodle dishes and other options. It’s the second restaurant for Andrew Friel, who co-owns Home Sweet Home further west in Carytown. Café Olé downtown to remain open while owner seeks buyer – If you’ve ever worked downtown in the Central Business District, or still do, you’ve no doubt been to Café Olé at some point or another. The Mexican restaurant, which serves up affordable fare in a (very) casual atmosphere, is for sale, reports the RTD’s Karri Peifer. But don’t fret–she says owner Betsy Thomas intends to sell to someone who is committed to keeping the space open, and says the sale could present an opportunity for a new owner. Get the scoop here.
Another week, another accolade for ZZQ – You’re probably getting tired of hearing about ZZQ by now between their recognition in Food & Wine Magazine and TexasMonthly–which said the Scott’s Addition eatery executes “flawless” Texas barbecue–but they’ve just received another. Thrillist calls ZZQ’s brisket the best you’ll find outside of Texas’ boundaries. Not bad for a restaurant barely open six months–and well-deserved, I might add. This stuff is the real deal. Read more here.
Boka adds Momma’s Barbecue to the menu – Speaking of barbecue, Boka Grill has now added Momma’s Barbecue to the menu at the Forest Hill location. Owner Patrick Harris, which started Boka with a food truck and later expanded into brick-and-mortar locations, recently started a truck called Momma’s Barbecue. He’s testing beef brisket, pulled pork, smoked chicken, and sausage made popular by his smoker on wheels. Holly Prestidge with the RTD has more.
