As Richmond’s culinary scene continues to grow and more people pursue healthy lifestyles, a new festival should fit in very nicely with it all.

Local group Vegan Action is hosting the area’s first ever vegan restaurant challenge January 26th through the 28th. Entitled Vegan72, the weekend-long event will see area restaurants create vegan dishes, and the group will host a number of events that coincide with the theme.

The number of people eating plant-based foods has risen by 500% since 2014, the group claims, yet many restaurants lack vegan options.

“We know Richmond chefs are up to the task of creating exciting plant-based menu items, so we’ve challenged area restaurants to flex their skills with special vegan options for this weekend only,” organizers said in a press release. Participating restaurants will create appetizer, entrée, dessert, and brunch selections throughout the weekend, many with an emphasis on locally-grown ingredients.

Some venues will donate a percentage of their sales to FeedMore, the area’s primary food bank.

“Richmond was named among the top vegan-friendly cities in the U.S. in 2016 and we need to keep up the momentum,” said Vegan Action Executive Director Krissi Vandenberg. “We’re excited to get the omnivores out to these restaurants to try vegan options and to have something new for vegan patrons. With our cooking demos, beer school, and diverse selection of dishes throughout the city, there really is something new and exciting for everyone.”
