Richmond restauranteurs are busily preparing to showcase their culinary creations for the inaugural Richmond Black Restaurant Week, set to kick off this coming Monday, March 6th.

The celebration, organized by minority business owners and supporters, is designed to promote economic diversity while celebrating Richmond’s best food fare.

The inaugural week has the aim of igniting a deeper understanding and love of Richmond’s food culture while encouraging agency in the future of the city, organizers say. The volunteer effort provides minority owned restaurants with marketing opportunities that could otherwise be cost restrictive with the goal of promoting food tourism and multi-cultural engagement.

“We are excited about the buzz around this celebration of our city’s diversity,” said Shemicia Bowen, one of the event’s key organizers. “We are proud of our city and all it has to offer, and want to highlight the impact that the participating businesses have on the Richmond economy.

Participating restaurants are offering two-course lunches for $15 and three-course dinners for $25.

Featured restaurants include Family Secrets, Croaker’s Spot, Mama J’s, Southern Kitchen, Nomad’s Deli, Brewers, Chef Mamusu’s Africanne Restaurant, Sugar’s Crab Shack, Loft Seventeen, The Speakeasy, Ma Michele’s Café, Cary 100, Charles Kitchen, Sweet Teas Cuisine, Ms. Girlee’s, Spoonbread Bistro, Traditionz, Inner City Blue’s, The DM Restaurant & Lounge and Big Herm’s Kitchen.

Richmond Black Restaurant Week has also partnered with Renew Richmond as its local, non-profit beneficiary. The organization serves underprivileged communities by building solutions around urban agriculture and community gardening in Richmond and beyond.
