Sadler Road closure drags on with no clear reopening date

County says daily inspections are happening, but weather-sensitive work means the timeline is still unknown.

The closure of Sadler Road between Innslake Drive and Scotland Lane is lasting longer than many Henrico residents expected, with no firm date yet for reopening. The road has been shut to through traffic since August as part of the county’s multi-phase Sadler Road Realignment & Improvements project.

According to the Department of Public Works, unforeseen issues during construction have pushed the reopening timeline back by “a few more weeks.” However, no specific causes have been cited publicly, and residents have expressed frustration over the lack of clarity and shifting expectations.

The project is aimed at improving roughly 1.9 miles of Sadler Road between Dominion Boulevard and Cedar Forest Road. When complete, the corridor will include a new alignment in certain sections, upgraded drainage infrastructure, a shared-use path, and roundabouts at Innslake Drive and Sadler Grove Road. The entire scope of work is expected to extend into 2026.

Henrico officials say inspectors are on site with contractors daily, monitoring progress and ensuring the road reopens as quickly as possible. They note that much of the remaining work is weather-dependent, which has added further uncertainty to the timeline. Recent county updates claim the shared-use path is nearing completion and work on the roundabout is underway, but a specific reopening date has not been offered.

The county had previously suggested the road might reopen in mid-October. However, with that window now passing, it’s unclear if the timeline has shifted again or if completion is imminent. Updates on social media and the official project website have been vague, emphasizing ongoing progress without offering concrete milestones.

Residents can follow updates and sign up for email alerts through the county’s new Public Input portal for the project here.

The full scope of the delay remains unclear, but officials maintain that the work is moving forward and that they will share a reopening date as soon as it’s confirmed. In the meantime, drivers are advised to seek alternate routes and stay tuned for updates.
