2023 RVA Sports Awards winners announced

Athletes, coaches, and fans were recognized for their contributions to the region at the RVA Sports Awards on Saturday night.

More than 600 guests celebrated the accomplishments of the region’s sports community during a live ceremony hosted by NFL quarterback Taylor Heinicke, entrepreneur Kelli Lemon and CBS-6 Sports Director Lane Casadonte.

The second annual RVA Sports Awards was presented by Rosie’s Gaming Emporium and Colonial Downs Racetrack. This year’s winners included:

  • Kings Dominion Female Athlete of the Year – Lindsey Frank, University of Richmond (Lacrosse and Field Hockey)
  • SouthState Male Athlete of the Year – Jada Byers, Virginia Union University (Football)
  • Brown Distributing Coach of the Year – Loren Johnson – Highland Springs High School Football
  • Synergy Technical Team of the Year – Randolph Macon Men’s Basketball
  • Rebkee Moment of the Year – Richmond Flying Squirrels Secure Playoff Appearance
  • Techno Branded SWAG Fan of the Year – Will Daniel
  • Dominion Energy Charity Classic Community Champion Award – Scott Schricker
  • Power of Sport Award Presented by VCU Center for Sport Leadership – Angel City FC
  • Sheltering Arms Institute Courage Story – Sportable

“These athletes and leaders are making a major impact on our community through sports,” said J.C. Poma, Richmond Region Tourism Vice President of Community Relations. “We loved celebrating our amazing sports community and region through the RVA Sports Awards. Our team is thankful for the many partners, sponsors and athletes who helped make the event a success.”

Proceeds from the RVA Sports Awards support the Richmond Region Tourism Foundation’s Sports Tourism Grant Program Presented by the Richmond Association of Realtors, which distributes grants to local sports organizations to develop new events and expand the promotion of existing events to attract new visitors to the region.

The Foundation is a 501(c)(3) and the philanthropic arm of Richmond Region Tourism and works to advance the impact and benefit of tourism on the Richmond Region by supporting and investing in local education, diversity and inclusion and sports tourism programs.

The event also funds the RVA Sports Awards Scholarship Program Presented by The 288 Group for two annual scholarships for students at Virginia State University’s Sports and Hospitality Management Program and in the Center for Sport Leadership at Virginia Commonwealth University.
