Casa Del Barco commissioning world-reknowned Mexican artist for restaurant mural

Inspired by the nearby murals at their original location on the Canal Walk, restaurant owners commissioned Mexico-based artist Curiot for a large interior mural at their Short Pump Town Center location.

Over the next week, local restaurant Casa del Barco is hosting world-renowned Mexico-based artist Curiot (whose real name is Favio Martinez) for a special project at their Short Pump Town Center location.

Inspired by the vibrant murals painted on the former power plant across from Casa Del Barco’s original location on the Canal Walk as part of the RVA Street Art Festival in 2013, the restaurant’s owners at HOUSEpitality Family decided the blank canvas at the Short Pump location deserved that same pop of color and energy.

To find an artist, Paige Healy, Chief Creative Officer of the company, reached out to Shane Pomajambo, Founder and Executive Director of the Richmond Mural Project. Pomajambo suggested contacting Curiot, who hails from the region of Mexico from which Casa del Barco pulls its culinary influences.

From Aztec prints to sugar skulls, his work is heavily influenced by Mexican folklore and is the perfect, authentic fit for the project, owners say.

Photos of the work in progress can be seen below. The work is expected to wrap up within the week.
