Crowdfunding campaign for former Richmond musician detained abroad amasses $17,000
While details are scarce, the guitarist travelled to the Middle East and was detained somewhere along the way after what Williams describes as “a series of missteps.”
A campaign has been set up on GoFundMe after a former Richmond musician has been allegedly detained in the Middle East, and it has raised almost $20,000 in under a week. D.J. Williams, who performed both solo and in a group capacity as part of the DJ Williams Projekt, later moved to California to tour with Karl Denson’s Tiny Universe.
According to a public Facebook post, Williams left Los Angeles on April 17th with plans to travel to Qatar, Dubai, and Abu Dhabi. While details are scarce, somewhere along the way he was detained after what Williams describes on the GoFundMe page as “a series of missteps:”
Family and Friends,
Due to a series of missteps on my part I have been detained in the Middle East for the time being. I want to say thank you to everyone for all of the love, support, encouragement and letters during this difficult time. I am staying positive and strong, and I’m going to come out of this a better person.
Thank you for your continued love and support, DJ
At press time, the crowdfunding campaign had amassed over $17,000 in donations, with a goal of $25,000 to cover the musician’s expenses until he can be freed and work again.
