Modern Richmond’s mission is to promote, educate, and celebrate modernism in Richmond. Our Vision is that Richmond becomes recognized as a center of modernism.

Architect and furniture designer Marcel Breuer once remarked that, “modernism is not a style, it is an attitude.”

Wikipedia has this to say.

Modernism is both a philosophical movement and an art movement that arose from broad transformations in Western society during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The movement reflected a desire for the creation of new forms of art, philosophy, and social organization which reflected the newly emerging industrial world, including features such as urbanization, new technologies, and war. Artists attempted to depart from traditional forms of art, which they considered outdated or obsolete. The poet Ezra Pound’s 1934 injunction to “Make it new!” was the touchstone of the movement’s approach.

Frank Lloyd Wright’s, Fallingwater in Mill Run, Pennsylvania is perhaps the most famous example of this style of architecture but there are plenty of examples here in Richmond as you can see from the video below.

Modern Richmond posted the following to Facebook:

Check out the Modern Richmond drone tour of Bon Air’s historic neighborhood Highland Hills. This neighborhood has approximately 89 homes that were developed in the mid-50’s by National Homes and designed by the architect Charles Goodman, an American architect that was known for his modern designs in Richmond, Va and outside of Washington, DC, which include the neighborhood Hollin Hills, Alexandria, Virginia.
