2020 Riverfront Canal Cruises Season Cancelled

For the safety of both our patrons and staff, and in accordance with the Governor’s “Stay at Home” order and phased approach to group gatherings and reopening businesses, we have made the very difficult decision to cancel the 2020 Riverfront Canal Cruises season.

Last year Riverfront Canal Cruises celebrated its 20th anniversary and we plan on being around for many more milestone anniversaries. However, the health of our visitors and staff are what is most important to us, and we believe that it will be too difficult to safely distance within the close quarters of a canal boat.

We appreciate your understanding and look forward to a banner year on the canal boats beginning April 2021. In the meantime, please stay safe and healthy, and enjoy a virtual tour!

Not all is lost, however.

Riverfront Canal Cruises is releasing a new 360-degree video featuring a virtual canal boat tour with a historic narrative, while also announcing the cancellation of the Riverfront Canal Cruise 2020 season.

The narration from one of our most-experienced batteau drivers touches on the SOLs for Virginia Studies and US History to 1865, assisting 4th and 5th graders as they complete the school year in a fun way. Of course, this 360-degree tour of the canal isn’t just for kids! Children and adults of all ages will enjoy Richmond’s amazing history.

The canal cruise video references and expounds on specific Virginia SOL standards along with so much more Richmond history. Those detailed standards included in the tour can be found on the Venture Richmond website.

The virtual 360-degree experience simulates an actual tour of the canal in the authentic boats, while seeing the restored James River and Kanawha Canal, the scenic Canal Walk, the Tidewater Connection Locks from 1853, the unique Triple Crossing railroads, historic architecture, the Virginia Capital Trail, the Low Line gardens, and James River wildlife.
