Protected bike lanes are pretty much what they sound like. A barrier of some sort is between cyclists, walkers, and powered vehicles. This, as you can imagine greatly, reduces the chances of an unfortunate meeting of these two groups.

You can read much more about protected bike lanes here.

An example of a permanent protected bike lane below. This is the region’s first post- and parking-protected bike lane (PBL). It’s only about .4 miles long in the East End on Fairfield Way.

Bike Walk RVA has the details on this Friday’s Pop-up:

Join us for a pop-up Protected Bike Lane demonstration Friday morning (3/2) at 9am on Franklin St downtown between Foushee St and Adams St so we can show City Hall our unwavering support for #MoreBikeLanes including the new PBL on Fairfield Way and the forthcoming one at the very location we’ll be on Franklin!

We’re going to be filming some professional video, so dress up or dress down however you like, and bring a friend!

Register here for updates and be part of #MoreBikeLanes.
