RVA Beer Explorer Weekly Picks
It’s a short week, let’s celebrate with a bit of beer.
GO DO THIS
Hurricane Harvey Benefit – The Veil Brewing Co., Thursday
Ten percent of draft sales from 4-9 PM go to the American Red Cross for Hurricane Harvey victims.
Red Army Invades – Vässen, Thursday
The Richmond Kickers are playing down in Orlando but the Kickers most passionate and loyal fans are gathering to watch the game at a brewery. A brewery is a logical choice for this group of fans because they’ve been known to partake in a few beers at game time.
Richmond Independent Music – Champion RVA, Thursday
Every Thursday in August Champion is celebrating the Richmond Independent Music scene with local labels and bands. Doors opening at 6 PM with music at 7 PM. This is free but 21+ so leave the young rockers at home.

Stone’s Throw Down in RVA – Brown’s Island, Saturday
Help Stone Brewing celebrate a year of being in Richmond with a bunch of band and beer on Brown’s Island. Summer might seem like it’s over but still plenty of outdoor festivals to be had.
This particular festival features six bands and lots of craft beer. Tickets are $10, kids 12 and under get in free so take the family down for some fun.
NEWS
Vice features Mekong, citing restaurant for igniting Richmond’s craft beer scene
Mekong gets accolades both local and national. It’s nice to see one of the small guys get their due props. This small guy is one of the smallest. Congrats to Final Gravity as PUNCH picks them as one the Best Under the Radar Brewery. Sure PUNCH had a question mark at the end of their headline but I intentionally chose to leave it off.
Tasting through nearly all of Final Gravity’s 13 draft beers one afternoon earlier this month, the descriptors I kept coming back to over and over again were “clean”, “crisp”, and “refreshing.” In fact, not only is the range of styles Ammendolia brews impressive, so is his grasp of making imminently drinkable beers, regardless of style.
DRINK THIS
RVA IPA Can Release – Hardywood, Saturday

Our “community hopped IPA” is brewed with 100% freshly harvested Virginia-grown hops and 100% Virginia-grown malt from Copper Fox Distillery in Sperryville, VA. From the first bittering hop addition to the flavoring/aroma additions to a final wet hop addition, more than 300 pounds of local Cascade, Columbus, Chinook and Centennial hops were used in this 60-barrel batch of beer. Brewed just once a year when hops are at their peak freshness, RVA IPA is sure to go quickly!
