The Westover Hills Branch Library (1408 Westover Hills Boulevard) will be hosting a film festival this September and October. Join your neighbors on Monday evenings at 6:15 PM for a free film and refreshments with a different country or culture featured each week. Most films run 90 minutes, some films are subtitled.

  • September 11: France – Breathless (1960) A small-time thief steals a car and impulsively murders a motorcycle policeman. Wanted by the authorities, he reunites with a hip American journalism student and attempts to persuade her to run away with him to Italy. – IMBD
  • September 18: Germany – Run Lola Run (1998) After a botched money delivery, Lola has 20 minutes to come up with 100,000 Deutschmarks. – IMBD
  • September 25: Italy – The Bicycle Thief (1948) In post-war Italy, a working-class man’s bicycle is stolen. He and his son set out to find it. – IMBD  (I’m making an assumption on this one. It’s also called Bicycle Thieves.)
  • October 2: Japan – Rashomon (1950) A heinous crime and its aftermath are recalled from differing points of view. – IMBD
  • October 16: Russia – Tangerines (2013) War in Georgia, Apkhazeti region in 1990. An Estonian man Ivo has stayed behind to harvest his crops of tangerines. In a bloody conflict at his door, a wounded man is left behind, and Ivo is forced to take him in. – IMBD
  • October 23: Sweden – Autumn Sonata (1978) A married daughter who longs for her mother’s love gets visited by the latter, a successful concert pianist. – IMBD
  • October 30: Spain – Death of a Cyclist (1955) A couple having an affair strike a bicyclist with their car and do not offer aid out of fear of their relationship being exposed. – IMBD

Interested in sponsoring refreshments for the festival? A 50 dollar tax-deductible donation will cover one week. Please contact Library/Community Services Manager Tara Franzetti at [email protected] for details.

Will you help support independent, local journalism?

We need your help. RVAHub is a small, independent publication, and we depend on our readers to help us provide a vital community service. If you enjoy our content, would you consider a donation as small as $5? We would be immensely grateful! Interested in advertising your business, organization, or event? Get the details here.

Richard Hayes is the co-founder of RVAHub. When he isn't rounding up neighborhood news, he's likely watching soccer or chasing down the latest and greatest board game.
