Must-See RVA! — McGuire House
A look into the history of Richmond places that are still part of our landscape.
1706 Buford Road
Built, 1881
Probably the first frame house erected in Bon Air, this two-story frame house with twin gables was built by Doctor Hunter Holmes McGuire in 1881. Said to have been designed by McGuire’s fourteen-year old son, the building features a symmetrical three-bay front composed of twin gables lined by a slightly inset longitudinal gable roof.

During the Civil war McGuire served as medical director of Stonewall Jackson’s Second Corps. Following the war he opened a highly successful private practice in Richmond. According to family tradition, during Reconstruction many of his patients were too poor to pay for his services; McGuire augmented his income by serving (for a standard $100 fee) as a stand by surgeon at duels between restless Union army officers.

In the 1870s McGuire was elected professor of surgery at the Medical College of Virginia and in 1882 he founded St. Luke’s Home for the Sick (now St. Luke’s Hospital). Richmond’s first private hospital. [CCO]
Buford Road is a busy thoroughfare. Small wonder that both photos have a privacy barrier in front.
