United Way seeks volunteers for annual free tax preparation service
The nonprofit will offer in-person, virtual tax preparation services in 2024.

United Way of Greater Richmond & Petersburg is looking for volunteers to participate in its tax assistance program that helps families work toward financial stability by providing free tax assistance through select in-person tax sites as well as a virtual tax assistance service.
The United Way Tax Assistance program, powered by VITA (the IRS Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program) offers free tax preparation for families and individuals with income of $64,000 or less with tax prep sites located throughout the Greater Richmond and Petersburg area.
“The United Way Tax Assistance program helps relieve the stress of tax season while also bringing additional financial resources to households that need it most,” said Cara Cardotti, Director of Tax Assistance Programs at United Way. “We rely on volunteers to make this program possible. It’s an excellent way to give back to the local community whether you’re interested in becoming a greeter, tax preparer or interpreter.”
No prior knowledge or experience is necessary to become an IRS-certified volunteer with United Way. There are several roles available to match a variety of skills and interests. Continuing education hours are available for attorneys, certified public accountants and enrolled agents. Bilingual volunteers are encouraged to volunteer. Individuals are asked to serve one volunteer shift per week when the season opens in late January 2024.
