Virginia Union University’s Keleaf Tate scored a team-high 21 points to lead VUU to a 97-90 come-from-behind win over Lincoln University of Pennsylvania on Saturday, January 22, at Barco-Stevens Hall in Richmond, Va.
Virginia Union trailed until four minutes left in the game when the Panthers took a 78-77 lead on a dunk by Jordan Peebles.
“You’ve got to tip your hat to Lincoln, because they played a great game,” said VUU Head Men’s Basketball Coach Jay Butler. “They put up 90 points on us and that’s the most we’ve had scored against us in a long time. We scored 65 points in the second half, and that was a great offensive performance. We needed to get some stops down the stretch and we got them when we needed them.”
Peebles scored 18 points while teammate Tyriek Railey added 16 points.
VUU’s Darius Hines scored 15 points and teammate Robert Osborne had a team-high eight rebounds.
The win raised Virginia Union’s record to 13-4 overall and 6-1 in the CIAA. Lincoln fell to 12-6 overall and 5-2 in CIAA play.
Virginia Union now travels to Fayetteville, N.C., to face Fayetteville State University at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, January 25.

Virginia Union University’s Robert Osborne scored 19 points and grabbed 14 rebounds as #14 VUU downed Salem University 75-64 on Saturday, December 10, at Barco-Stevens Hall in Richmond, Va.
VUU’s Keleaf Tate and Raemaad Wright each scored 14 points in the game while teammate Devon Sims added 11 points as the Panthers raised their record to 8-1.
“It’s always good to get a quality win during finals week,” said VUU Head Men’s Basketball Coach Jay Butler. “I thought we came out with a lot of energy on both ends of the court. I was really impressed with our seniors today . They know what it’s like to play during finals week and I challenged them to be leaders today. Robbie and Raemaad continue to do a great job in the paint scoring and rebounding.”
VUU will now face Shepherd University at 7:00 p.m. on Monday, December 12, at Barco-Stevens Hall in Richmond, Va.

VUU will wrap up the 2021-22 regular season when the Lady Panthers travel to Raleigh, N.C., to face Shaw University at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 19.

Virginia Union University’s Ny Langley recorded a double-double for the second consecutive game as VUU downed Salem University 84-75 in the Lady Panthers’ home finale on Thursday, February 17, at Barco-Stevens Hall in Richmond, Va.
Langley led VUU with 18 points and 15 rebounds in the win.
VUU’s Ymani Breedlove grabbed 11 rebounds while teammate Chris Alston scored 17 points.
Virginia Union’s Raven Williams added 11 points and Darryn Zeigler scored 10 points in the win.
“Salem University plays a very tough, fast paced style of basketball, but we really locked in defensively in the fourth quarter and held them to 6 points,” said VUU Head Women’s Basketball Coach Tierra Terry. “We had four people in double digits, and Ny Langley showed her pure will and determination tonight with 18 points and 15 rebounds. We are really proud of our overall defensive effort tonight, and that is what won us this game.”

Virginia Union University’s men’s basketball team reached the 20th-win plateau for the first time in five years as the Panthers downed a stubborn Elizabeth City State University team 57-51.

Virginia Union University’s men’s basketball team reached the 20th-win plateau for the first time in five years as the Panthers downed a stubborn Elizabeth City State University team 57-51 on Wednesday, February 16, at Barco-Stevens Hall in Richmond, Va.
The 2016-17 team won 22 games, and now the Panthers have a record of 20-6 overall and 12-3 in the CIAA.
The win was also the 24th straight home win for the Panthers and marked the first time since the Dave Robbins era that VUU finished a season undefeated at home.
Virginia Union’s Tyriek Railey and Raemaad Wright led the Panthers in scoring with 10 points apiece while Robert Osborne led VUU on the boards with nine rebounds.
“This was a hard-fought win tonight against a tough Elizabeth City team,” said VUU Head Men’s Basketball Coach Jay Butler. “We struggled offensively tonight and missed a lot of free throws, but defense kept us in the game, and we made plays down the stretch to get the win on Senior Night. We wanted to send seniors Tyriek Railey, Jordan Peebles, and Kelvin Calhoun out with a win on their last home game.”
Elizabeth City State fell to 13-12 overall and 6-9 in CIAA play.
