Blanchard’s Coffee hosting 2019-2020 U.S. Coffee Championships Preliminaries

Competitors advance through Preliminaries, Qualifiers, and finally, National Championships to select a National Champion in each category, who will represent the US in World Coffee Championships competition.

U.S. Coffee Championships is a national competition series for coffee professionals competing in one or more of five categories: Barista, Brewers Cup, Roaster, Cup Tasters, and Coffee in Good Spirits. Competitors advance through Preliminaries, Qualifiers, and finally, National Championships to select a National Champion in each category, who will represent the US in World Coffee Championships competition.

Preliminary competitions offer competitors the opportunity to attend regional events and compete for a limited number of guaranteed slots in the Qualifier competition round. Competitors are evaluated and scored by trained judges in each category. Because Preliminaries are community organized events, competition weekends often include auxiliary events and programming to provide entertainment and educational opportunities for competitors during downtime, as well as opportunities for the general public to participate in the event and show off the host city’s coffee community.

Blanchard’s bid to host U.S. Coffee Championships Preliminaries focused on the ideal central location of Richmond, Virginia to the entire Mid-Atlantic and beyond, as well as the vibrant and rapidly growing coffee community of which it has been a part since 2005. With competitors coming from throughout the US, Blanchard’s Coffee is producing a weekend that includes competitions throughout Saturday and Sunday at two locations: Blanchard’s Coffee Roasting Co. Roast Lab, and Studio Two Three, as well as Latte Art Throwdowns and various other side events designed to showcase Richmond, Virginia’s vibrant coffee scene.

Events are open to the public unless otherwise specified, but attendees are encouraged to sign up for general admission to give the hosts accurate expectations of crowd sizes. Head to Brown’s Island to Catch a Movie

A series of four movies are coming to Brown’s Island.

Movies on the Island, presented by Dominion Energy, is a new, outdoor family activity, brought to you in 2021 by Venture Richmond Events. Find your perfect spot on Brown’s Island and enjoy an evening featuring a family-favorite film while taking in the stunning views of the James River and Downtown’s skyline.

Movies:

  • Saturday, July 10 – Grease – 8:30pm showing, 7:30pm gates open
  • Saturday, August 14 – Black Panther – 8:30pm showing, 7:30pm gates open
  • Friday, October 29 – Beetlejuice (showtime TBA)
  • Saturday, December 11 – Elf (showtime TBA)

Tickets are only $5 per person (ages 5 and under no ticket needed) and must be purchased in advance online at VentureRichmond.com. Tickets will not be available for purchase the day of the event at the gate. Attendees must present tickets at the gate, either as a pre-printed paper ticket or on a mobile device. Food vendors on the island will include, Strawberry Street Events, Westray Ice-Cream and Ryan’s Kettle Corn.

Seating location is first come, first served. Bringing blankets and/or chairs for comfort is recommended. No pets are allowed on premises during the movies. Parking is available at the American Civil War Museum ($), Belle Isle parking lot, and on-street parking is available along 2nd and 5th Streets. In case of inclement weather, please check our website for updates at VentureRichmond.com. All ticket holders must agree to comply with safety precautions put in place during the event. All public health protocols will be strictly enforced, and contactless practices have been implemented for the safety of our guests and staff.

Hermitage Richmond hosting “Concert Under The Stars” series beginning this Friday

All three of these live music events will take place on the lawn at 1600 Westwood Avenue and are free and open to all residents, families, team members, and community friends who share a love of music and camaraderie.

Hermitage Richmond in Ginter Park has announced a new outdoor concert series which will be hosted on the front lawn of the senior living community.

This year’s Concert Under the Stars series will feature the following performances:

  • June 11th at 7 p.m. – Joe Laluna will perform a mixture of jazz, American Standards, and popular contemporary music
  • July 9th at 7 p.m. – Me and Martha will perform American Rural Roots Mountain Music
  • August 6th at 7 p.m. – Second Floor Band will bring a mixture of danceable classic rock, swing, big band, Motown, R&B, and jazz

All three of these live music events will take place on the lawn at 1600 Westwood Avenue and are free and open to all residents, families, team members, and community friends who share a love of music and camaraderie. Guests are encouraged to bring chairs, blankets, and picnic baskets. Social distancing and face masks are recommended.

“This is a wonderful opportunity to enjoy great live music and share a family-friendly evening under the stars with our residents and neighbors,” said executive director Amy Chapman. “We want everyone to have a great time and know that good times are always celebrated at Hermitage Richmond.”

Concert Under the Stars is the latest addition to Hermitage’s Richmond on the Green series that hosts an array of campus events and fulfills its mission of “Enriching Life’s Journey.”

Richmond Flying Squirrels offering first responders free tickets to game June 13th

The Richmond Flying Squirrels will host First Responders Day, presented by the Brad Clark Memorial Fund, at The Diamond on Sunday, June 13th.

Active-duty police, firefighters, and EMS from the cities and counties throughout Central Virginia are eligible to receive two complimentary General Admission tickets to the game against the Harrisburg Senators, based on availability. Eligible first responders simply need to show their ID or badge to receive the tickets. Advanced redemption is strongly encouraged.

Tickets can be picked up in advance at the Flying Squirrels offices or at the ticket booth on the day of the game.

The Brad Clark Memorial Fund was established in memory of Hanover County Fire Lt. Brad Clark, who was killed in the line of duty in 2018.

First pitch for the game is scheduled for 1:05 p.m. The ballpark gates open at noon. Kids 14 and younger can run the bases following the game presented by Richmond Family Magazine.
