Throw It Back to 1919 at Science Museum of Virginia
Enjoy a bit of throw-back science, cocktails, jazz music and dancing in one of the coolest buildings in Richmond.
Most people know that the Science Museum of Virginia used to be a train station. This weekend it’s turning into something a little more exotic, a speakeasy.
As part of the 100th anniversary of its building, the Science Museum of Virginia is transforming into a speakeasy and encouraging adults to party like it’s 1919 at the third Science on Tap event.
This is all going down tomorrow, Thursday, Jan. 17th, from 6 to 10 p.m. Tickets for Science on Tap: Speakeasy are $10 for the general public and $8.50 for members. Food and drink must be purchased separately.
For more information, visit www.smv.org. Science on Tap is presented by WestRock.
The evening’s activities include throw-back science, cocktails, jazz music and dancing. Guests can create an inkblot and have Freud interpret it; see what we’ve learned in the last century about space in the Dome; play a game of Two Truths and a Lie to discover 100-year-old science; meet Edison, Tesla and Marie Curie; take a swing dance lesson with Jazz Den; use fun props to capture the night at the photo station; and sample cocktails from Hamilton Beach’s new cocktail maker.
Guests are encouraged to break out a flapper dress, fedora, Homberg or suspenders. If they don’t have something to wear, they can make their own headpiece or bow tie in The Forge during the event. Guests wearing the best costumes will be invited to take part in a contest for the chance to win a prize.
Modeled after the Museum’s popular Science After Dark series, 20 and 30 somethings can spend an evening exploring the exhibits and enjoying the special activities. But unlike those events, no guests under 21 will be around, the content will be for mature audiences only and everything can be enjoyed with alcohol in hand.
Food trucks will be easy to find but beverages from Belle Isle Moonshine and Garden Grove will be stashed in a hidden speakeasy.
Just because you’re an adult, doesn’t mean you can’t discover something new! The Science on Tap series inspires grownups to have a good time at the Museum while deepening their connection to the science all around them.
