RVA Beer Explorer

RVA Beer Explorer Weekly Picks

The winds haven’t damaged the Richmond beer scene and here’s what we think you should be doing and drinking this week.

Answer Brewpub 4th Anniversary – Answer, All Week

Mekong along with Hardywood is often credited with kickstarted the Richmond beer scene. The Answer Brewpub was a natural progression for owner An Mekong. It’s been four years of serving up award-winning beers and rather than celebrate just one day it’s a whole week of celebration. Check out all the events here.

The big day is Saturday.

Saturday, September 22nd
12PM: 400 Scratcher tickets.
Ken + Ryu Special Edition Glass Set Release. 16oz Craft Master One glasses made of thick shatter resistant / temperature shock resistant glass. 800 sets will be available, 2 sets per adult person, $40 / set. Tickets may be distributed prior to opening for your convenience. We will have a cash line to expedite glass purchases.

St. Benedict Oktoberfest – St. Benedict Parking Lot, Friday – Sunday

The 14th Annual St. Benedict Oktoberfest will again be three days! So, get your dirndls and lederhosen ready and head over to the Museum District for a ton of different beers, oompah bands, chicken dances, sausages, and pretzels bigger than your head.

Old Molasses Ale: history, science, and beer! – Ardent & John Marshall House, Friday & Saturday

History with beer and all about beer history.

Ardent Craft Ales and the John Marshall House, a Preservation Virginia historic site, are teaming up for a weekend of history, science, and beer!

We brewed a special historical beer to celebrate John Marshall’s birthday. Plus, we’re excited for the opportunity to extract yeast from a bottle of Medeira that’s remained preserved in the John Marshall House cellar for hundreds of years, and hopefully use it to brew a modern day beer using the same historical strain!

First, join us in the taproom at 4 p.m. on Friday, September 21, when we’ll introduce our latest pilot brew: Old Molasses Ale. This beer was based on a recipe from John Marshall’s cousin, Mary Randolph, that she brewed in the late 1700s and featured a late addition of molasses in the boil. Representatives from the John Marshall House will also be on hand.

On Saturday, September 22, Ardent heads downtown for a day of history, science, and beer! We’ll be serving Old Molasses Ale at the John Marshall House, which is opening up its doors for free admission to mark Time Travelers Weekend. In addition to touring the house and learning about John Marshall, keep an eye out for scientists demonstrating how we hope to capture yeast from bottles of Madeira that have been preserved in the cellar.

The John Marshall House will be open 10am-5pm on Saturday:

12:00: Presentation & discussion with historical brewer Danny Fain
1:00: Scientific demonstration of extracting yeast from corked bottle
2:00: Presentation & discussion with historical brewer Danny Fain
3:00: Scientific demonstration of extracting yeast from corked bottle

John Marshall, a Richmond native, was the longest-serving Chief Justice of the Supreme Court and is largely responsible for establishing the modern influence of the court. He was also quite fond of Madeira, a Portuguese wine that he shared enthusiastically with friends at his Richmond home.

3rd Anniversary Celebration – Final Gravity, Saturday

One of the smallest breweries in Richmond but also one of the best turns three. Head to Lakeside and celebrate with the crew. Not only will Final Gravity have some special beers but they have a lineup of guest beers.

Final Gravity Brewing Co. is turning 3 and we’re excited to celebrate with you all! We’ll again be taking over the large parking lot out back and filling it with amazing food from Pizza Nostra RVA, Charm City Crab Cakes, & Gaucho, a plethora of amazing guest taps from local and regional breweries, special Final Gravity Anniversary brews, tunes by DJs PJ Sykes and Melissa Koch, live music by East of Afton, and special anniversary merchandise.

Riverfront Beer Garden – Triple Crossing, Tredegar

The folks from Triple Crossing brought their tasty IPAs down to the riverfront earlier this year. It was such a success they’re doing it again this Saturday.

We’re excited to bring back our outdoor pop-up beer garden at Historic Tredegar on the James. Since the last event we will be adjusting many things to make the experience better. There will be a lot more shade, seating and various other accommodations. We’ll be pouring beer on the patio at Tredegar overlooking the James River and Brown’s Island from 12-8pm on Saturday, September 22nd. Triple Crossing favorites like Falcon Smash IPA will be available alongside several other Triple Crossing beers and a brand new release just for the event. Dank EatsMean Bird and Spotty Dog Ice Cream Co. will be set up on site for lunch or dinner and we’ll have music all day.

Church Hill Music Co. will be playing from 6-8PM so come out and celebrate the beautiful RVA outdoors and welcome fall in style. A portion of all proceeds from the event will go to benefit the American Civil War Museum at Historic Tredegar. This is a free event to attend and everything will be sold by the pour.

None Shall Pass! Our newest release features a dark, rich oatmeal porter that would make even the Black Knight stand down. With big roasty flavors accompanied by delicate chocolate notes and hints of coffee, this porter will get you ready for Fall. The hearty addition of oats in the mash provides body and a hint of sweetness. Don’t falter in the presence of this delightful dark brew.

RVA Beer Explorer’s Last Call

The RVA Beer Explorer is sailing off into the sunset but hopefully, you’ll like its fuzzy replacement.

The RVA Beer Explorer is throwing in his beer-soaked towel. The number of breweries and the beer scene of Richmond is awesome. Over the years for health reasons (nothing dramatic just self-realization about my intake) I’ve become less and less part of that awesome beer scene. As a result, I don’t have the passion needed to keep writing about beer every week so it’s time to say goodbye. RVAHub will continue to cover the big beer events and they’ll show up in their respective neighborhood areas or on the main site. We wouldn’t want you to miss out on some of the more unique events that pop-up.

Later today I’ll launch my new weekly post Critters of the Week. It will feature a picture and information about a wild animal spotted in the RVA area and an animal up for adoption by SPCA or RACC.

To my loyal readers out there I thank you for spending time with me each week and putting up with my many, many typos.
