starting around 10PM.Kendra Feather opened Ipanama Cafe as Richmond’s only full-service basement vegetarian restaurant and bar on a different Grace Street in September 1998 – across from the XXX theater, between the strip club and the punk club, and downstairs from the tattoo parlor. Two decades later VCU is all grown up, there is a Walmart across the street and a Chipotle down the way, but the little veggie bar abides.
“When I was 27,” she says, “I didn’t know that I’d open a restaurant when I was 28.” She really had no idea what she’d get into after that – in addition to Ipanema, Kendra owns 3 other restaurants. She opened Garnett’s Cafe in 2009, followed by The Roosevelt (with Lee Gregory) in 2011, and Laura Lee’s in September 2016. Feather was also a founding partner in WPA Bakery in November 2012.
“I’ve had maybe 200 employees,” says Kendra. “So many creative, fun people have passed through here. I’ve been lucky… I’ve got to say, I can’t imagine Ipanema now without Greg Darden, he’s been here for 17 years.”
