Local police departments setting up DUI checkpoints around Richmond area tonight

The coordinated effort between area police departments will be the first of its kind and hopes to stop impaired driving across Central Virginia.

The Richmond Police Department is joining law enforcement agencies across the region to participate in DUI checkpoints that will occur in multiple areas tonight and through the morning hours. This is the first time a region-wide effort has been conducted on the same evening.

There will also be mobile patrols in areas looking for impaired drivers. This is part of an ongoing effort to educate the public and stop drunk driving.

The checkpoints will be manned by police from Richmond, Henrico, Chesterfield, New Kent, Virginia State Police, Virginia Commonwealth University Police, and Powhatan County in their respective jurisdictions from 8:00 PM until 2:00 AM. Specific locations won’t be announced for obvious reasons.

“This is one of many operations the Richmond Police Department conducts as part of our Vision Zero campaign,” said Sgt. Jonathan Nathanson.

So far this year, over 200 drivers have been arrested for driving under the influence in the city of Richmond.
