Army National Guard member in custody after taking armored vehicle on joy ride from Fort Pickett to Richmond

The chase, which made international headlines, began in Blackstone and ended in Downtown Richmond at E. Broad and 11th Streets when the suspect surrendered.

It was a sight to behold last night–something out of a movie, even.

State Police took an Army National Guard member who stole an armored personnel vehicle into custody late Tuesday night after he took it on a joy ride from Fort Pickett in Nottoway to Downtown Richmond.

Police sources say the chase began near Blackstone where the driver led authorities on a pursuit that eventually went down Interstate 95. The suspect, who has not yet been identified, then got off at the Boulevard exit and continued through Scott’s Addition and The Fan before stopping the vehicle at E. Broad and 11th Streets downtown. Chase speeds only reached around 40 MPH, the maximum speed for the vehicle.

The suspect surrendered around 9:40 PM after being tased, State Police say.

No word on what charges the driver faces or his identity. We’ll continue to follow this story.
