The week in brief

Good afternoon, Wrappers! The end of the short week is upon us and the weekend cometh again, and boy what a packed-out one it is. Let’s dive right in.

Your first weekend assignment is to attend Friday Cheers tonight, featuring Tyler Childers and Saw Black. Get out there for this $5 show on Brown’s Island and enjoy, because tomorrow we could be facing lots of showers and storms. Here’s our show preview.

Elsewhere this weekend, the Richmond Greek Festival (my favorite and the most delicious, arguably) brings a taste of Greece to the Near West End. Need some tips on what to enjoy and how to survive the crowds? We’ve got you covered in our event guide here. On Sunday, Broad Appetit returns, too. You can sample delicious dishes from some of the area’s best chefs all afternoon downtown for just $3 a plate. With all that food, you’re gonna need a strategy. And yep, you guessed it, we gotcha covered right here.

Henrico Police have identified a pedestrian that was struck and killed by a motor vehicle off Brook Road last weekend as 46-year-old Charles L. Rogers. Rogers was struck by one vehicle, the driver of which stayed on scene, before being hit by a second driver, who fled. Police are still searching for a suspect in the hit-and-run portion of the tragic event. More here.

Bon Secours, which owns the Westhampton School property at Patterson and Libbie Avenues, is considering developer proposals for the site and submitted plans with City Council to rezone the property. Surrounding residents recently filled out an online survey outlining what they would–and wouldn’t–like to see be built. The organization plans to build a medical office building on a portion of the land and will give preference to proposals that preserve the circa-1917 school building–although they won’t promise it isn’t going to be demolished. Get caught up here.

Scott’s Addition-based Buskey Cider is expanding to the Eastern Shore, and it was all because of one customer’s suggestion, only a month ago! I find this entire story fascinating. Best of luck to Will and Elle Correll on their new outfit in Cape Charles!

Five things to know

  1. The summer-long Festival of the “HEarts” kicks off this weekend at Dogwood Dell.
  2. The Valentine is hosting a series of walking tours exploring the Museum District beginning this weekend.
  3. Chicken Fiesta has plans to go national and franchise–but first, they had to scoop up some office space.
  4. The goats are back at Forest View Cemetery!
  5. Our resident historian can find plenty of interesting things to say about even a building that basically looks like a filing cabinet, and I love that.
