Return of the Goats
At 4909 Bassett Avenue sits a weed-covered cemetery. Human volunteers and hungry goats are working to get rid of those weeds.
The intersection of two things I like is pretty awesome. In the case of Friends of Forest View Cemetery, the two things are history and goats. In this particular case, the goats are helping unearth and clean-up a bit of neighborhood history.
There is a small mostly forgotten cemetery at 4909 Bassett Avenue. The cemetery dates back to the 1800’s and has been overgrown with brambles and ivy for decades. The picture below is before any work had started. It already looks a bit better.

Friends of Forest View Cemetery are working to keep the cemetery and create a neighborhood green space. One way they’re doing it is through hours of back-breaking work in poison Ivy and brambles. Another way they’re doing it is by working with RVA Goats to have the goats come in and eat away some of that ivy and bramble mess.
The goats did a little work this fall but there is plenty more work to be done so they’re back for Round 2. Come check them out and talk with volunteers to see how you can get involved.
Friends of Forest View Cemetery:
Please join us Memorial Day, Monday, May 28th, at 10 a.m. to see the goats entering the cemetery for Phase Two! There will be a Q & A session right after the goats are installed, so you can learn more about goats and the cemetery restoration! Thanks and hope to see you there!
