The Birdhouse Farmers Market returns for its 12th season next Tuesday, May 1st from 3:00 to 6:30 PM, nestled between the Randolph Community Pool and Petronius Jones Park at 1507 Grayland Avenue.

This is the market’s third year in this location, following nine years adjacent to the William Byrd Community House. This season, the market will include approximately 20 vendors, including many who have been with the market since its inception, such as Deer Run Farm and Byrd Farm as well as first-time vendors Mount View Beef and Chippokes Creek Farm.

In addition to vendors selling Virginia-grown produce, cut flowers, dairy, and meat, the market offers resources and activities for the whole family including composting, cooking demos and a pop-up library. The best way to keep track of weekly activities is to subscribe to the Birdhouse Market Newsletter and to follow the market on Facebook and Instagram.

This year, the market has brought on a new Market Manager, Cheryl Bursch.

“I am honored to be a part of the Birdhouse Family,” Bursch said in a statement. “Being a full-time Market Manager has been a dream for years. I am so grateful for this opportunity.”

The market is the only of its kind in the city to provide a commitment to matching all food stamp purchases up to $20.

“We are lucky to have a unique market like Birdhouse,” said Dominic Barrett, Executive Director of Shalom Farms. “Having a mid-week market that is centrally located in the heart of the city [that matches Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (food stamp) purchases] is such a community asset. It’s something that doesn’t exist elsewhere in the city.”

Birdhouse Market will host several events to support the mission of the market including a farm dinner on Sunday, June 3rd at ZZQ and a pool party and cookout on Tuesday, August 7th at Randolph Pool.

2018 Vendors include Agriberry, Amy’s Garden, Bonnyclabber Cheese Co., Bright Spot Coffee, Byrd Farm, Cherry On Top, Chippokes Creek Farm, Dayum This Is My Jam, Deer Run Farm, Eli Talbert Mushrooms, Empanadas Market, Faith Farm Foods, Heath Farm, Indo Tibetan Kitchen, King of Pops, Mt. View Beef, River City Bakery, Sub Rosa Bakery, Sun Path Family Farm, The RAW Aura, The Apple Cart, Tomten Farm, Uncle Dave’s Kettle Korn, and Wild Earth Fermentation.
