The Spins featuring Moby’s Play – Triple Crossing (Foushee), Thursday
The Spin play an entire album while you sit and drink beer. Most of us live in an electronic music ruled by the shuffle button. This world, while diverse often misses out on what the artist was trying to convey. At the end of the album a few are given away and your odds of winning are pretty good.
The week the album is Moby’s Play.
‘Play’ was an outlier when it was released in 1999; an electronic album made with decades-old vocal samples, a last-ditch attempt by Moby to forge a successful music career. Thanks to licensing deals that put Play in movies and car commercials, it sneakily got more airplay than any electronic album before or since, and because of that, has become the most influential. Electronic music went from being the province of a few obsessives to being a global force thanks to Play’s mainstreaming of the genre.
Earl Grey Brown Ale release party – Ardent, Saturday
This would normally go below in our Drink This section but they added the word “party” to their announcement. They’re backing up the word with action.
Earl Grey Brown Ale is back! This annual tradition is a collaboration beer between Ardent Craft Ales, Potter’s Craft Cider, and Champion Brewing Company, and we’re bringing it back for the 4th year in a row on Saturday, January 13.
For this release, we’re throwing an all-day party and showcasing our friends in Ardent’s taproom! In addition to Earl Grey Brown Ale and some of our other offerings, we’ll also have EIGHT guest taps pouring Potter’s ciders and Champion beers. Plus, River City Wood Fire Pizza will be here all day firing up their awesome pizzas!
Earl Grey Brown Ale starts with classic brown color and white, frothy head. The rich tea and citrus aromatics give way to easy-drinking mouthfeel and flavors of black tea and bergamot on top of a classic, malt-forward English brown ale. A light-bodied, mild brown ale with hints of Earl Grey tea. 6.5% ABV, 20 IBU
Jester King Tasting Room Remix!!! – The Veil Brewing Co., Saturday
Jester King is a well-known brewery out of Austin, Texas. This weekend they’ll be up here with a truckload of beers and setting up at Veil for a day of beer. Seriously, Jester King will 13 beers that you’ll likely never have a chance to get fresh off the tap without traveling to Texas. Veil won’t be slouching either, they’ll have 15 of their own beers. This is not a ticketed event so expect a Texas-sized crowd. Full details including beers being poured is on Facebook.
Rated “M” for Monday – Center of the Universe, Monday
The brewery and boardgame partnership continues with Center of the Universe on Mondays. The games they list fall into the “Adult Party Game” category but I’m sure you can bring something a little more serious have a nice big table and beers within easy reach.
MONDAYS SUCK! We can make your Monday suck a little less with our new event series M for Mondays. You can expect: Beer, adult coloring books (available with AND without swear words), more beer, board games not suitable for those under 17 or anyone with a weak heart, BEER, and making new friends with other people with questionable morals!
Here’s some of what you’ll get:
Cards Against Humanity: “A party game for horrible people”
That’s What She Said: “You’ll never see your friends the same way again”
Joking Hazard: “Compete with your friends and enemies to finish an awful three-panel comic”
Exploding Kittens: “It’s like UNO, except there are goats, magical enchiladas and kittens that can kill you.”
Industry Night Yoga – Champion Brewing, Monday
Two events in a row that aren’t until next week. You can start talking about it now to your friends so that you can be the cool one telling them about the next “big thing”. Maybe they’ll be so impressed they’ll buy you a beer.
Every Monday at 5pm Champion Brewing Company – RVA will be hosting $12 yoga classes geared towards service industry folks. We’ll be focusing on mental and physical well being for service industry people who stand all day or night, with particular attention to your feet, legs and backs.

RVA Draft Room Open – Facebook
Having someone serve you a beer is so, 2017. All the cool, beer kids are swiping cards and getting/paying for their beer by the ounce. RVA Draft Room opened over the weekend and features over 50 beer, wine, and cider taps. This definitely seems to be the trend started last year and continuing into 2018.
Haven’t been to a pour your own place yet? Here is the breakdown of the process: You show ID, get a card with a magnetic strip (giving them your credit card info. first), use card on a massive wall of taps to pour by the ounce, when done pay on your way out. There is a limit to how many ounces you can buy at a time. Exceed that amount and you’ll have to take to someone to get it re-upped.
RVA Draft Room is located at 3300 West Cary Street.
Hardywood Park Craft Brewery’s new West Creek brewery and taproom in Goochland County held a ribbon-cutting ceremony yesterday with Governor Terry McAuliffe and hundreds of invited guests. We’re assuming our invite got lost in the mail.
The more exciting news is that the brewery will have a soft opening sometime mid-February and an official grand opening scheduled for April 6-8th.
The brewery will open with 35,000 barrels of annual brewing capacity and the ability to scale up as needed.
“We chose Virginia because we love the region. We love the energy, the enthusiasm, and we love the appreciation for finely crafted things,” Hardywood co-founder Patrick Murtaugh said.
Bohemian Pilsner Release – Ardent, Thursday
Bohemian Pilsner is a traditional Czech pilsner, brewed with a simple recipe of Czech floor malt, Saaz hops, and a Czech lager yeast. Bo Pils pours a clear golden color with soft mouthfeel, spicy hop notes, and clean finish.

RVA Beer Explorer’s Last Call
The RVA Beer Explorer is sailing off into the sunset but hopefully, you’ll like its fuzzy replacement.
The RVA Beer Explorer is throwing in his beer-soaked towel. The number of breweries and the beer scene of Richmond is awesome. Over the years for health reasons (nothing dramatic just self-realization about my intake) I’ve become less and less part of that awesome beer scene. As a result, I don’t have the passion needed to keep writing about beer every week so it’s time to say goodbye. RVAHub will continue to cover the big beer events and they’ll show up in their respective neighborhood areas or on the main site. We wouldn’t want you to miss out on some of the more unique events that pop-up.
Later today I’ll launch my new weekly post Critters of the Week. It will feature a picture and information about a wild animal spotted in the RVA area and an animal up for adoption by SPCA or RACC.
To my loyal readers out there I thank you for spending time with me each week and putting up with my many, many typos.
