The week in brief

Good afternoon, Wrappers! The big news today is snow! As of this writing, it’s coming down pretty good in the Fan. As such, knowing how even the threat of snow can alter plans around Richmond, all Richmond Public Schools after school activities and weekend events are cancelled. More here. Christmas on MacArthur, scheduled to take place in Northside, is also off due to the inclement weather. The Richmond nativity pageant has also been cancelled, but not due to weather. The show is off this year due to planned renovations to the Carillon. Plenty of stuff is still going on this weekend, though. Check out our Weekend Event Picks below!

Despite the snow, the Confederate protesters are back–or at least claim to be coming back. Richmond Police say the CSA II protesters who came here several months ago may make an appearance at a rally Saturday morning, but there won’t be any road closures this time. You’ll recall that last time the Confederate sympathizers were outnumbered ten to one by counter protesters.

Venture Richmond has launched a cool new pole banner campaign downtown celebrating the city’s creativity and diversity. The organization teamed up with Scout Design to create 26+ banners, one representing each letter of the alphabet (some letters have multiple designs), which are being placed around the city this week. They’re pretty cool and really well designed, and Mayor Stoney even helped hang one a couple days ago.

Thinking forward to warmer thoughts, Music at Maymont has announced its first artist for its spring series in 2018. Brandi Carlile will take the stage in May, and tickets are on sale. In other forward-looking news, the Richmond Kickers have brought on Heviel Cordovés who should be a much-needed goal scorer for the soccer team. He comes to RVA from the Charleston Battery. Meet him here.

Five things to know

  1. Virginia State Inspection stickers are moving to the left side of your windshield next year. Here’s why.
  2. The VMFA just received an $8.4 million gift, which will be put towards a painting conservatorship.
  3. Henrico Police are shopping with local kids this Sunday to make spirits a little brighter.
  4. The final Hamaganza takes place this evening at the Canal Club.
  5. It’s snowing and OH MY GOD GET TO THE GROCERY STORE AND BUY ALL THE MILK, EGGS, AND BREAD! Spoken like a true Richmonder, no?!

Until next time,
