UPDATE: It appears at least a few customers were allowed inside the store and received a police escort to do so, per NBC12:

The worldwide, exclusive release of a new Nike shoe was set to take place this morning in Carytown, but was cancelled after some of the hundreds who lined up in front of Need Supply Co. in Carytown became disorderly and police were called.

The store was set to release the Nike Air Max 97/1, designed by native Richmonder Sean Wotherspoon. Folks from around the country reportedly lined up more than a day in advance to be among the first to own the colorful Nike sneakers, the likes of which could only be attained from Need Supply.

Around 4:00 AM, Richmond Police called in 25 officers in addition to the two off-duty officers who had been hired to monitor the crowd. No description of what exactly happened in the crowd was immediately available, but store owners thought it was in the best interest of all involved to cancel the release.

The shoes will be released to the general public in March of 2018 and will retail for $160. No word on whether the Richmond release will be rescheduled. Need Supply Co. plans to remain closed all day Tuesday.
