Publix files plans to demolish former Martin’s stores in The Village, Westpark shopping centers
The two buildings were originally built as Ukrop’s stores before being converted to Martin’s locations. Now Publix wants to demolish both to make way for stores with more modern amenities and larger footprints.
New-to-Richmond grocer Publix is currently in the process of converting many former area Martin’s stores to their brand, some of which have already opened their doors. Some of the older, smaller stores, however–all of them former Ukrop’s locations–will be demolished to make way for stores with larger footprints and more modern amenities.
The Richmond Times-Dispatch is reporting at least two vacant Martin’s stores will meet the bulldozer in the coming months if plans are approved.
The store in the Village Shopping Center at Three Chopt Road and Patterson Avenue, built in 1994, would be razed under plans filed with Henrico County. A second store at W. Broad Street and Pemberton Road, built in 1989, would also be torn down, allowing for a larger store in its place.
Many are speculating, based on information from neighboring tenants, that the Carytown store may also be demolished in the future, however no plans have been filed regarding the Richmond Shopping Center on W. Cary Street between Thompson and Nansemond Streets.
