One Near West End neighborhood is going to get a pop of color as part of a planned cleanup day this Saturday, July 29th.

Neighbors and volunteers will meet up in Westwood Park this Saturday to pull weeds, plant flowers and trim trees while local artist Hamilton Glass paints a mural across the playground pavement at Westwood Playground. Westwood, situated near Willow Lawn and Patterson Avenue, was originally settled by former slaves in the early 1870s.

The cleanup is sponsored by Chesapeake Bank (which maintains the grounds throughout the year and whose employees organized the effort), the Enrichmond Foundation, and Westwood Baptist Church.

History, tradition and community run deep in Westwood. Community leaders are devoted to preserving their little piece of town. As part of an overall effort to preserve the community, Westwood will soon hold elections for officials for the first time in many years.

The Westwood Park Cleanup Day takes place Saturday, July 29th from noon until 3:00 PM. Volunteers should meet at 5409 Marian Street.
