Publix Super Markets is opening its first store in Virginia on Saturday, July 15th, and we got a sneak peek inside this morning. The store, located at 5400 Wyndham Forest Drive in Glen Allen–just off of Nuckols Road–will open its doors at 7:00 AM.
The 54,000–square-foot building is the first of many new area stores the company will open in the coming months and was newly-constructed, unlike many of the forthcoming stores, which will be housed in former Martin’s Food Market stores that closed or are closing soon as the grocer pulled out of the Richmond market.
The store at Nuckols Place will employ 140 employees and–in addition to full-service meat, seafood, deli, and bakery departments–includes a drive-through pharmacy, event planning center staffed with employees and ideas to help with everything from tailgates to weddings, a cooking demonstration area offering customers hands-on meal ideas that rotate each week, and an in-store Starbucks.
As part of the store’s opening, management donated $5,000 to 10 Henrico County schools surrounding this particular location at a ceremony Friday morning. Donations were distributed to Colonial Trail Elementary, Kaechele Elementary, Deep Run High, Holman Middle, Nuckols Farm Elementary, Rivers Edge Elementary, Shady Grove Elementary, Short Pump Middle, Springfield Park Elementary, and Twin Hickory Elementary. Each received $500 of the total amount.
An employee-owned company, Publix is based in Lakeland, Florida and employs approximately 188,000 people across their span of six southern states which includes Florida, Georgia, Alabama, Tennessee, South Carolina, North Carolina, and now Virginia. It raked in $34 billion in sales in 2016.
The Nuckols Road Publix will be open seven days a week from 7:00 AM until 10:00 PM and is led by Manager Chellie Peck, a 17-year employee who moved to Richmond to run the store.
