International grocer New Grand Mart replacing soon-to-close West End Food Lion
New Grand Mart, an international grocer specializing in Asian, Middle Eastern, African, and Latin grocery items, will open a location in the 40,000-square-foot space by the end of 2017.
Just as Food Lion announced plans to close its underperforming store at 9031 W. Broad Street in the West Broad Commons shopping center, a new international grocer is set to take its place, with upgrades to boot.
Bethesda, Maryland-based real estate firm Broad Street, which shares a name with the store’s future location, announced Wednesday that New Grand Mart, an international grocery chain specializing in Asian, Middle Eastern, African, and Latin grocery items, would occupy the almost 40,000-square-foot space being vacated by Food Lion. Food Lion announced the decision to close the store amid plans to renovate its other 70-plus stores around the Richmond area, citing poor sales.
New Grand Mart currently operate three stores in the Washington, D.C. area and another in Midlothian. The W. Broad Street location will be the company’s fifth overall.
“We are excited about our new anchor tenant,” Broad Street CEO Michael Jacoby said in a news release. “New Grand Mart is a growing, specialized grocery (store) that carries a variety of specialty items (that are) hard for other food purveyors and markets to provide to the Richmond community. They will be a great addition to West Broad Commons Shopping Center.”
Along with a new anchor tenant, West Broad Commons will receive some new upgrades including two new LED pylon signs, new facades throughout the entire shopping center, and new roofs, the company said.
The improvements should be made and the store should open by the end of 2017 if all goes to plan.
