Friday Cheers on Brown’s Island

The music continues at Brown’s Island Friday night as Richmond rock band Sleepwalkers–a staple of the local music scene for a few years–opens for Rainbow Kitten Surprise. Sleepwalkers have been working on a new album and there’s a good chance the Friday Cheers crowd might be the first to hear some fresh material, according to music contributor Scott Castro. Headliners Rainbow Kitten Surprise sound like the title of the best YouTube video you’ve ever seen, right? Well, rest assured they bring that aesthetic to their music too–equal parts bouncy and poignant.

When: Friday, June 16th; 6:30 PM | Where: Brown’s Island on the Downtown Riverfront | Cost: $10 | More info: Show preview

Movies In The Park at Byrd Park

Movies In The Park, a family-friendly outdoor movie series, begins Friday evening with a film in Byrd Park. Bring the whole family to enjoy The Secret Lives of Pets (PG). All sorts of fun activities will take place in the area surrounding the outdoor projector beginning at around 8:00. The movie will begin at 8:30 or when it gets dark enough. Concessions will be available for purchase, too.

When: Friday, June 16th; 8:00 PM | Where: Byrd Park, 600 S. Boulevard near The Fan | Cost: FREE to enter; pay for concessions as you go | More info: Event schedule

Ardent Craft Ales Third Anniversary Party in Scott’s Addition

Ardent Craft Ales in Scott’s Addition is turning three this weekend, and they’re throwing one helluva party to celebrate. The brewery is closing down W. Leigh Street to throw a massive party. Highlights include beers from 22 other breweries and food from 10 different vendors. The street festival is free to enter and open to the public. Beer purchases will be ticketed at $6 a pop, with ticket sales at the door and inside the event. All food is pay-as-you-go from the individual food vendors and the whole shindig is rain or shine.

When: Saturday, June 17th; noon – 8:00 PM | Where: Ardent Craft Ales, 3200 W. Leigh Street in Scott’s Addition | Cost: FREE to enter, pay for beer and food as you go | More info: Event article

Barbecue & Bluegrass Festival at City Stadium

Join the Richmond Kickers for live music, barbecue, and 15 craft beers on tap at City Stadium on Saturday. It’s the Barbecue & Bluegrass Festival! The party starts at 5:30 PM with live bluegrass music by the Cary Street Ramblers. Twenty-two dollars gets you access to a pre-game VIP party, North Carolina pulled pork barbecue with coleslaw, Jamaican jerk chicken with pineapple pico, barbecue portobello mushrooms, signature curry potato salad, and more from local vendor Cultured Swine. Plus, you get two craft beers or sodas and admission to the Richmond Kickers vs. the Tampa Bay Rowdies game at 7:00 PM. Sounds like a fun night to me.

When: Saturday, June 17th; 5:30 PM | Where: City Stadium, 3201 Maplewood Avenue near Carytown | Cost: Tickets are $22 | More info: Ticketing website

RVA Bacon Festival Downtown

Lovers of bacon, rejoice! Your day in the sun has arrived. This festival is just for you. The RVA Bacon Festival returns downtown on Sunday, and a whole host of vendors will be serving up sample trays of bacon-filled foods for $4 a pop. The bacon starts slinging at noon and goes until 5:00. One important note is that the festival is not in the traditional spot at the 17th Street Farmers Market due to construction.

When: Sunday, June 18th; noon – 5:00 PM | Where: 1615 E. Broad Street Downtown | Cost: $1 suggested donation; $4 a plate for food samples | More info: Event article
