So writ Mr. Winthrop in 1982, and it’s hard to argue with him. A jewel it’s not – an unattached box on a slab.

It is clearly a building of its time. The facade has modernist styling with a simple, uncluttered look, using glass block for a window-within-a-window effect.

The building has changed hands many times. The first listed owner on the Assessor of Real Estate sheet is Virginia Mfg Assn Inc., then Advertising Associates Inc., in 1967, then Dameco Corp in 1975. It became the Law Offices of Joseph Blackburn and his partners in 2013.

Certainly not the most ancient of structures, but one that’s filled a purpose pretty steadily since it was built. Why do buildings remain? Because they are useful. Barring further eastward expansion by VCU, it’s not hard to imagine this one sticking around for another 62 years.
