From Henrico Police:

On the evening of Sunday, August 21, 2016, Henrico Animal Protection Police received a call from the 3700 Block of Meadow Road for a skunk that was attempting to attack chickens and a dog. When officers arrived at the location it was reported that the property owner had killed the skunk. Contact between the skunk and the dog was highly probable. The skunk’s remains were collected and submitted to the State Lab for Rabies testing.

Positive test results were received on Tuesday, August 23, 2016. The dog that was involved in the incident had a valid rabies vaccination and will be quarantined on the owner’s property. There were no reports of any additional human or animal exposures involving this skunk.

Henrico Animal Protection Police would like to remind everyone to keep their pets’ rabies vaccinations current and to report any abnormal wildlife behavior or suspected rabies exposure to Henrico Police Non-Emergency Communications at 501-5000. This incident is the first confirmed positive rabies case for 2016 in Henrico County.
