Richmond Ballet returns to Dominion Energy Center for five performances for Dracula February 16-18. This will be the Virginia premiere of Ben Stevenson’s bold story ballet that has enthralled audiences around the country for over 25 years. The classical ballet is a true gothic romance that will delight thousands over Valentine’s Day Weekend in Richmond.

Internationally renowned choreographer Ben Stevenson, O.B.E., created his Dracula as a co-production with Houston Ballet and Pittsburgh Ballet Theater in 1997. When the theatrical ballet premiered, The New York Times described it as “spectacle of an order ballet audiences seldom see today.” The production includes lavish costumes designed by Judanna Lynn, striking scenery designed by Thomas Boyd, atmospheric lighting designed by Tim Hunter, and dynamic production elements, including aerial effects, pyrotechnics, and a ghostly carriage. The work will be set on the Richmond Ballet dancers by repetiteur Dominic Walsh, a former principal dancer with Houston Ballet who was a member of the original cast.

Richmond Ballet will once again be accompanied by the Richmond Symphony playing the haunting score of works by Hungarian composer Franz Liszt as arranged by John Lanchbery. The orchestra will be led by Richmond Ballet Resident Conductor Erin Freeman and joined by Guest Piano Soloist Douglas-Jayd Burn.

“I am incredibly excited for our company to bring Ben Stevenson’s Dracula to Virginia,” said Richmond Ballet’s Associate Artistic Director Ma Cong. “This is a truly bold ballet with a high production value and dramatic choreography that evokes the spirit of a blockbuster show while still maintaining the classical ballet style that our audiences crave.”
