Inaugural Easter Keg Hunt in Ashland – Saturday, Origin Beer Lab
The Easter Bunny has been dabbling in a little steroid use and beer drinking. No longer hiding eggs he’s moved on to kegs. We all win.
Forget Easter eggs, Ashland, Virginia businesses are planning an Easter Keg Hunt to celebrate the Easter holiday! Origin Beer Lab has teamed up with the Ashland Main Street Association to host the Inaugural event downtown on Saturday, April 20th. Local businesses have decorated Easter Kegs to hide them around downtown Ashland for a family-friendly and fun-filled afternoon.
How it works
Pick up a free Easter Keg Passport at Origin Beer Lab starting at 1pm on April 20th. Roam around the designated “hiding” area and find all the colorful Easter Kegs. Each keg will have a bright green tag with a serial number on it. Write down the serial number next to the business the keg represents (the business name will also be on the back of the green tag). In addition to finding the kegs, participants can vote for their favorite Easter Keg to crown one businesses with the first “Golden Egg” trophy. Turn in your completed card to Origin Beer Lab for a free (kid friendly) treat and automatic entry to win the grand prize of a “We are Ashland” Easter basket valued at over $200.

Roger, a self-described ‘fall-down drunk’ and sniper in Vietnam, and Kouy, a Cambodian refugee who fought the Khmer Rouge, bonded in the bustling tent-city known as Mushroom Camp, which pops up each autumn in the Oregon woods. Their friendship became an adoptive family; according to a Cambodian custom, if you lose your family like Kouy, you must rebuilt it anew. Now, however, this new family could be lost. Virginia NORML is a non-profit organization that provides a voice for marijuana law reform to help establish regulated medical and adult-use production and sales for a safer Commonwealth. Hops are related to marijuana (both get their aroma from Terpenes) and we packed this beer to get that full aroma and taste. A heavy Citra, CTZ, Chinook and Amarillo dry hop schedule to cover several specific Terpenes: Limonene (citrus), Pinene (piney), Linalool (floral) and Humulene (typical hop aroma). Rye was chosen as the base to give it a peppery, dry background to help simulate the dank taste of your favorite strain.”
In addition to the beer release, Three Notch’d will be hosting CHUPACABRAS, an amazing, funky, afro-beat band. They play at 7!

BEER NEWS
It’s nice to get the background on one of the local brew master powerhouses and the creation of Gingerbread Stout
FROM VIRGINIA TECH HOMEBREW TO HARDYWOOD: A CHAT WITH BREWMASTER BRIAN NELSON – RVA Mag
In 2011, I created the RVA IPA using local hops and that recipe went into our Farmhouse Pumpkin beer, which is still a staple today. We then moved on to our base single and experimented with batches that incorporated cocoa, coffee, and vanilla. Suddenly, Bill Cox from Castleman Farms came in with a big bunch of ginger and asked if we could do anything with it. He was trying to find restaurants in Richmond that could use it. This ginger had big green stalks that were four feet tall, and the root has “hands” that were in the ground. It was baby ginger, meaning the translucent flesh was edible without peeling the outer skin. So he presented this to us and we were grinding our gears when Eric McKay came up with this idea, how do we integrate gingerbread? There wasn’t a gingerbread stout out there in the market — it had never been done before and we still consider our gingerbread stout, the original gingerbread stout.
