Buy a Teacher a Beer Year 2019 – Castleburg, All Year

Every single teacher I know is a hard working underpaid quality person. They deserve a beer. Castleburg has created a way for me to give even the teachers I don’t hang out with a beer.

Let’s show some love to some of the hardest working, under paid, and most unappreciated individuals out there! For the entire year of 2019, when you visit Castleburg you will be able to purchase an additional beer designated for a teacher.

TEACHERS: Check out the board on the side bar to see if there are any available beers to be taken. Present your teacher ID, and BOOM, you get a beer!

Thank a teacher, buy them a beer!

Trivia Tuesday – Basic City Beer Co, Tuesday

Every brewery has a Trivia Night of some sort so I don’t cover them very often. Since I’ve never announced Basic City’s Trivia now is the time, well actually today is the day, 7 PM is the time. If your mind retains the trivial head to Manchester this evening.

Paulo Franco and The Freightliners – Legend, Friday

Just like the above post on trivia nearly every brewery has music on the weekends. The reason I’m highlighting Paulo is that he’s a buddy of mine and despite my bias, he’s a great musician to catch. Grab a beer and enjoy the show. Music kicks off at 8 PM.

Tabol Brewing Getting Closer

We don’t have a date yet on the Northside brewery Tabol Brewing but they paved their parking lot and are just waiting for a couple more inspections.

New Beer Blog to Check Out

American Beer Revolution hasn’t hit any Richmond breweries yet but it’s Virginia local and entertains. Plus in a bit of randomness, the creatorsWayne and Nadiya Kelly have a connection to my distant past. Wayne used to manage the Galaxy Hut up in Arlington which I had been known to frequent many years ago. Check it out. Below is their take on Blue Mountain.

Shiplock Brewing Now Open

Shiplock Brewing opened back in December and I haven’t done a RVA Beer Explorer since so now I’m giving you news that it isn’t very new. Shiplock moved into the totally not cursed location (115 south 15th) in Shockoe Bottom that previously was home to Stool Pigeons, Mayor Willy Mayo’s, and most recently 7 Hill Brewery. I haven’t heard one word about the place so if you’ve been let us know.

Smoke & Mirrors Smoked Porter Release! – Three Notch’d RVA Collab House, Thursday

“Smoke & Mirrors”
Smoked Porter
ABV: 6%
IBU: 20
Collab w/ Secret Sandwich Society

“Smoke & Mirrors” is the perfect smoked beer for any beginner in the style. We used Beechwood Smoked Barley from Germany to bring that light smoke sensation, bringing back memories of sitting around a fire on a cold winter’s night. That with equal parts chocolate, dark roast and caramel malts bring a smooth but complex beverage. Goldings hops from the UK give a subtle earthy aroma.

Also, be sure to check out Secret Sandwich Society on Friday for a Three Notch’d Tap Takeover featuring the new release! You’ve got to pair up their eats with this beer, it’s amazing. They are located at:

501 East Grace Street
Richmond, Virginia

Earl Grey Brown Ale Release – Ardent Craft Ales, Saturday

Earl Grey Brown Ale is back! This annual tradition is a collaboration beer between Ardent Craft Ales, Potter’s Craft Cider, and Champion Brewing Company, and we’re bringing it back for the 5th year in a row on Saturday, January 12.

For this release, we’re throwing an all-day party and showcasing our friends in Ardent’s taproom! In addition to Earl Grey Brown Ale and some of our other offerings, we’ll also feature guest taps pouring Potter’s ciders and Champion beers. Plus, River City Wood Fire Pizza will be here all day firing up their awesome pizzas!

Earl Grey Brown Ale starts with classic brown color and white, frothy head. The rich tea and citrus aromatics give way to easy-drinking mouthfeel and flavors of black tea and bergamot on top of a classic, malt-forward English brown ale. A light-bodied, mild brown ale with hints of Earl Grey tea.

6.5% ABV • 20 IBU
🍺Available on draft in the taproom
✔️Available in 4-packs of 12 oz. bottles to go

RUSE Release – Hardywood, Saturday

Patiently aged in red wine barrels, Hardywood Ruse unites port-like qualities with distinct dark chocolate and molasses characteristics, while oak and leather dominate the aromatics. Ruse offers a rich mouthfeel with a deceptively dry, tannic finish.

Return of Murder Hole Mango DIPA – Castleburg, Friday

An intensely hoppy, fairly strong Double IPA brewed with fresh mango makes this a very drinkable IPA. IBU’s are 100+ on this one!

WC FOOD TRUCK: 1. Smokery Pl.

Castleburg’s Sixth Anniversary!!
May 28th, 2-10 PM

This is a brewery I don’t give enough credit to. Their beer has steadily improved and they host a ton of local groups. Great to see them hit their 6th Anniversary.

We’re turning six!!! Come celebrate the entrance into this new year of Castleburg Brewery with us!

-We’re bringing back our Six Fingered Man Sour Ale w/ Blackberry and Lime! Get it? Six Year Anniversary? Six Fingered Man? We think we’re clever.
*Six Fingered Man is heavy on the malted wheat and a big helping of milk sugar giving this 3.3% ABV sour a full body. Our signature kettle souring technique and the addition of both blackberry and lime provides an approachable tartness and fruity finish. Prepare to… drink.*

-We will also have cider! Our friends over at Old Town Cidery of Winchester, VA will have their Pippin hard cider on! This cider is a single varietal of the Ablemarle Pippin, an apple grown by Thomas Jefferson. More of a fine wine, with a sharp, dry finish. 6.9% ABV

-Big Fundamental will be performing in the taproom at 7pm, with Midnite Taxi and Whitney & the Saying Goes

BEER NEWS

Seems like this would be a no-brainer but I guess it needs to be said out loud.

Maybe Don’t Use Serial Killers in Your Craft Beer Marketing – The TakeOut

Dahmer, Kemper, Gacy, and Ramirez collectively killed at least 80 people. The horrors they committed are only a generation behind us—Kemper is still alive in prison in California—and victims’ families are constantly retraumatized by the continued commodification of these killers’ likenesses. To take these figures’ legacies of violence, sanitize them, strip them of context, and turn a profit is to delegitimize the suffering they’ve caused.

Beyond these very good reasons to not use a serial killer’s face to sell any product, craft beer has all the more reason to avoid this kind of marketing. This is an industry that, exactly a year ago, experienced a large-scale reckoning where dozens of people came forward with stories of sexual misconduct and abuse. The Murder Box stands as a signal that, despite any progress made in the past year, there are still sections of the beer industry that remain untouched and unconcerned.

Lilly Pad permit would limit live music volume, hours at Varina venue – Richmond BizSense

A provisional-use permit proposed for the restaurant and the larger Kingsland Marina would limit live music to certain hours and decibel levels, among other conditions that county staff is recommending after determining that the expanded restaurant had outgrown the parameters of a previous permit.

How these Richmond craft breweries are supporting Ukraine through beer – RTD

After Russia invaded Ukraine, a Lviv craft brewery with the name of Pravda stopped making beer and started brewing Molotov cocktails.

Soon after, the brewer called on fellow brewers around the world to show solidarity with Ukraine by brewing one of Pravda’s beers for charity. Pravda, which is the Russian word for “truth,” made that possible by posting its recipes online.

Several Richmond craft breweries have joined the “Brew for Ukraine” initiative, which aims to raise money for humanitarian relief through sales of the beer and to call attention to the plight of Ukrainians.
