For 46 years the Richmond Coliseum has hosted VCU’s spring commencement. That tradition is coming to a sudden end this year as VCU announced that the Richmond Coliseum is no longer booking event after December 2018 and won’t be able to host the commencement.

The school looked at other venues including the Siegel Center but all the other options were either too small like the Siegel Center or too expensive. As a result, the decision was made to cancel the spring commencement ceremony.

VCU posted this FAQ today:

The Richmond Coliseum, which has hosted VCU’s spring commencement ceremonies for 46 years, will be unavailable to us in May 2019. We explored several alternative venues across the region, but all were unavailable because of cost, size, or access. Therefore, VCU will not hold a university-wide commencement ceremony in May 2019. All spring and summer 2019 graduates will be honored at their college, school, or department ceremonies, which will continue as normal the week of May 8-12 and are historically very well-attended by graduates. Meanwhile, we are working to secure space for future university-wide spring ceremonies.

Note that VCU’s fall 2018 commencement, which is Dec. 8 at the Stuart C. Siegel Center, is unaffected and will proceed as scheduled.
