Charm School Ice Cream Shop Opening New Shop in Westover Hills
Short on details right now but expect home-made ice cream, inclusions, and waffle cones.

Great news from the downtown dessert spot Charm School has some great news for ice cream lovers in the area. The development across from Westover Station (formerly Zata, formerly Taza read about the name change here) on Westover Hills Boulevard that will be home of a Veil Brewing outpost is now adding ice cream to the mix.
In December 2016, Alex Zavaleta and Meryl Hillerson opened Charm School’s flagship and production hub, Social Club, in the 3,000 sq ft space at 311 West Broad St. (Incidentally, they were the first “social club” on that block, before Black Iris and the soon-to-be Common House.)
Two years later, Alex and Meryl are ready to begin Charm School’s expansion, a reflection of the flagship’s success and growth. The co-founders have officially signed a lease to occupy 750 sq ft for their second Charm School shop, to be located in the new construction mixed-use building at 4910, 4920 and 4930 Forest Hill Ave.
The new space will offer an ice cream concept that Richmond hasn’t yet seen. The second location be referred to as Charm School Study Hall. We can’t reveal much just yet, but we can share that the new space will include:
- Late-night service including a walk-up window
- Ample parking via an adjoining lot
- Classic Charm School touches – of course there will be a record player!
Construction will soon be underway, and Charm School Study Hall is expected to open in 2019. Building Owners: A group led by Birck Turnbull and Charles Bice. General Contractor: Ben Adamson, owner of Corinthian Construction. Design: Fultz & Singh Architects.
Charm School is best known for their inventive, unconventional, delicious approach to ice cream. They hand make all of their ice cream, inclusions, and waffle cones at their Social Club location. They always offer considerable vegan options, including their signature toasted fluff.
There is a little more information at Richmond BizSense.com including a brief mention of changes in design.

PREVIEW: Kickers Face Playoff Nemesis Chattanooga
Revenge is a dish best served at City Stadium. Chattanooga knocked the Kickers out of the playoffs last year and the Kickers are looking for payback.

Opponent: Chattanooga (2-5-2)
Date/Time: Saturday, June 3rd, 7:00 PM
Last Result: Kickers 1 – Tormenta 1
Weather Forecast From WeatherBug.com
Three Things to Kick About
- Vinyals Returns – Nil Vinyals came off the bench last Saturday so barring a training setback he should be in the starting lineup. With the midfielder back in action expect the midfield to look better and hopefully more in control of the ball. In theory that control should lead to more transition into attack and more goals.
- Everyone Scores – So far this year seven different Kickers have scored, with midfielder João Silva leading the pack with 3. The latest goal was a beautiful Olympico but Sukow that must be seen to be believed. Don’t whine at me that it was a cross. It goes into the books as a goal and will be celebrated as such. So far 8 goals have been produced by the midfielders and defenders. Meanwhile our forwards, you know the guys paid to put the ball in the net have racked up 4 goals.
- Hot Ticket – It does my jaded heart good to see the amount of support in the stands the team is getting this year. Every game so far has had over 5,000 in attendance. This is well over the 3,500 or so we averaged last year. I’m not sure what switch flipped in the community but I’m glad to see it happen. The drawback is longer lines for food and drink but the Kickers are addressing that with more trucks. If you’re looking for a drink don’t forget there are multiple beer stations you don’t have to go straight for the building in the center of the concourse.
Prediction
The Kickers had a tremendous season last year until their first playoff game. In that game, despite being a man up for the majority of the game they ended up losing to Chattanooga by a goal. The fans, coaches and certainly the players remember the night a little too well. A win would have meant hosting the Championship Game in City Stadium, instead, it ended with a crushing defeat. Revenge will be on everyone’s mind and Chattanooga is not having a great season. The Red Wolves sit in second to last place and have a -8 goal differential. If ever there was a time for the Kickers to rack up some goals and get their scoring mojo flowing this is it. I predict it will happen.
Kickers 3 – Chattanooga 0

Free Fishing Days in Virginia are June 2–4
Normally you need a fishing license to fish but not this weekend. A great opportunity for the fishing curious.

No fishing license of any kind will be required for recreational rod and reel fishing during free fishing days and facilities use permits will also not be required during these dates. To increase angling opportunities, DWR has removed the restriction to fishing designated stocked trout waters for free fishing weekend. This will open over 2,900 miles of trout streams, in addition to numerous ponds, small lakes and reservoirs. Virginia’s diversified trout habitat offers a wide range of trout fishing prospects. All fishing regulations including size, season, catch limits, and gear restrictions will remain in effect.
DWR fee fishing areas still require a fee for Free Fishing Days weekend.
