Monroe Park Fountain Attracts Swimmers

This is not the first time the fountain has been used this way but it’s not built for this kind of abuse.

You would hope that a metal fence and common sense would prevail but that’s hoping for too much. Shortly after the fences came down on the Monroe Park renovation individuals decided to use the fountain as their personal playground. Not only were people splashing in the water in other photos they were seen climbing the cast iron fountain structure.

The fountain has attracted swimmers in the past and tragically climbing on the fountain even resulted in one death. CBS6 and Mark Holmberg published a story on the tragic event.

VCU Police have stated that not only is swimming in the fountain illegal but even being in the park after dark is prohibited. I suspect they’ll be keeping a much closer eye on the fountain in the weeks to come.
