Park(ing) Day will turn parking spots to parks on Friday
A day devoted to briefly turning parking spots into actual real-life parks for humans not cars.
When you walk or bike around our urban landscape you become very aware of how much of that landscape dedicated to the car. A car, which in most cases is only transporting one human takes up a disproportionate amount of space not only in operation but at rest. When you think about it throwing money into the meter allows you to lease a small piece of expensive city property.
Park(ing) Day is all about using that lease for making a tiny urban park instead of temporary car storage. The first Park(ing) Day took place way back in 2005 and has spread globally.
September 21st is this year’s official Park(ing) Day so expect to see a few parking spots in and around Richmond magically (not really it’s a bunch of hard-working volunteers) turned into parks.
I know there will be other parks set-up but here is one that is definitely happening.
Richmond’s parklet will be open at Main and Tenth streets in front of the Suntrust Building from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
The event, held annually on the third Friday of September, began in San Francisco, but has taken hold in cities ranging from Ames, Iowa to Zurich, Switzerland. This year, Richmond’s parklet will feature native plants from Lewis Ginter Botanical Gardens, live music, and programming from local organizations throughout the day.
