A sample of the beer events and news that we think you shouldn’t miss. Cheers to the long weekend.

Backpacking 101 – Väsen Brewing, Wednesday

Dreams of hiking the Appalachian Trail but don’t the first thing about putting your home on your back? Well you can learn about backing while drinking beer.

As the summer season nears its close, my favorite time of year is just around the corner. Fall perhaps is one of the most amazing times of the year to get outdoors. As sweltering temperatures die down and leaves begin to change, it’s hard to resist throwing the backpack in the car, grabbing a couple of friends and hitting the trail for the weekend. For this month’s Mappy Hour we will be talking about the basics of hiking and camping. Travis Gray will be sharing his do’s and don’t on the trail as well as his experience thru-hiking the AT. Before you know it, the time will come when through hikers take off on their journey to hike the entire Appalachian Trail. Ever wondered if you have what it takes? Join us for this months Mappy Hour and find out. No matter if you been hiking and camping for years or just getting into the outdoor scene. There will be tips and tricks for all.

P.S. We will have some of our favorites go to gear available everyone to check out, so come early and pop up a tent or light a camp stove be for the talk begins. Hope to see everyone out.

Jim’s Eyeballs Fundraiser – Lickinghole Creek Craft Brewery, Friday

The fact that so many people need to have fundraisers for medical treatments is a topic a little too serious for this column. Something you can ponder while having a beer and helping Jim be able to see.

As we all know, Jim is having eye surgery this week and we want to help him pay for ‘new’ eyeballs! Insurance isn’t covering everything so we want to help him see the light without suffering from his pocketbook. Any little bit will help if you want to bring some extra pennies.

Preparing to Get Wild – Richmond Magazine

Northside’s Tabol Brewing gets some more pre-opening press, including the best quote in perhaps all of Richmond Brewing history.

“I said, ‘Screw the stainless, we’re putting everything into barrels,’ ” says Caudle, who’s been home brewing for the last 15 years. “What’ll be our main focus is what all the other breweries tend to do as side projects.”

Dark Dessert Mint Chocolate Milk Stout Release! – Three Notch’d Collab House, Thursday

Join us this Thursday and every Thursday for new beer releases from the RVA Collab House with Pint Specials from 4-7pm. Check out this week’s release from RVA Head Brewer Willey Broaddus:

Coming to the end of summer, everyone deserves one last sweet treat. We present “Dark Dessert”, brewed with mint leaves, lactose for sweetness and cacao nibs for a rich chocolate flavor. This beer is delectable and sure to satisfy your sweet tooth.

All the King’s Horses IPA – Castleburg Brewery, Friday

Can there be too many IPAs? Neigh! This oat IPA is bursting with citrus, tropical fruit, and melon flavors. Hopped with Idaho 7 and Citra, the oats and honey malt in the mash provide body and a rounded character to this smooth drinking beer. At 6.3% it’s crazy drinkable so saddle up and storm the castle for our newest hoppy offering. Giddy-up!

Magnificent 7 Double IPA Returns – Final Gravity, Friday

Wave bub-bub-bub-bye to the boss early on Friday and head on over to Final Gravity for the return of this 8% Double IPA featuring Idaho 7 hops. Catch the taste of apricot, red grapefruit, and papaya with notes of resiny pine and black tea. It’ll get you up and get you out!
