After nearly two years of work, the park is getting ready to re-open.

The revamping of Monroe Park began in November of 2016. The fences are set to come down at the end of this month but work will continue through most of September.

The project has not been popular with some residents and you can scroll through the complaints on the Friends of Monroe Park Facebook page.

More on the renovations and remaining work to be done from RTD:

Work on the plaza and the Checkers House will continue after the soft opening but should be completed in time for the ribbon-cutting at the end of September, Summers said. The city will also continue planting trees along Belvidere and Main streets in the fall. Summers said 53 trees were cut down while the park was closed. About 140 new trees will be planted and other new landscaping will be completed by the time work is finished, he said.

New plantings also are set to flank a World War II memorial that the city placed an electrical utility panel behind during renovations after an alternate site was ruled out. The landscaping — which is set to be weighed by the city’s Urban Design Committee on Thursday — is meant to screen the panel from view.

Monroe Park is one of the oldest in Richmond and was established in 1851.
