Kroger launches new “Scan, Bag, Go” technology, allowing customers to skip the checkout line
The Willow Lawn Kroger store will be the first of 18 Richmond Kroger stores to add the scanning system, which allows for quicker checkout.
Local Kroger stores are adding some new technology to allow customers to bypass the checkout line and get on with their day faster. “Scan, Bag, Go,” as the system is called, uses new technology to enable shoppers to scan products for quicker shopping.
Here’s how it works. Customers use a wireless handheld scanner or the Scan, Bag, Go app on their personal device to scan products as they shop. They can then pay for groceries right on the mobile app. Customers also have the option to use self-checkout to pay. There is no fee to use the scanner or app.
Kroger has tested Scan, Bag, Go in several locations across the country. The Roanoke area was the first in the Mid-Atlantic division to add the technology back in February. The Willow Lawn Kroger is the first store in the Richmond area to offer it, and it will be added at more stores in the Richmond area in the future.
The service is another option for customers to shop, alongside online ordering, traditional checkout lanes, and home delivery. Kroger’s in-house research and development team built the new system.
“Our customers want the ability to choose when and how they shop with us to make their lives easier,” said Allison McGee, corporate affairs manager of the Mid-Atlantic Division. “Our goal is to provide customers a simple, personalized shopping experience that saves them time and money.”
“Customers tell us they like being in control of their shopping,” said Kyle Russell, Scan, Bag, Go manager for the Mid-Atlantic Division. “They monitor their spending and can stay within their budgets. We’ve learned many customers prefer to bag their own groceries to meet their needs at home.”
The Scan, Bag, Go offering aims to save customers time by avoiding traditional checkout lanes. Kroger has three dedicated team members in the store to assist customers. One is located at the kiosk at the main entrance of the store where a video explains how Scan, Bag, Go works, and the others are at a secondary kiosk and in the produce section.
The scanner allows customers to view and download digital coupons, keep a running total of their order and view current sales. A team member applies paper coupons.
The store has specially designed scales in the produce department for items that must be weighed.
Customers are encouraged to bring and use their own reusable bags to shop; Kroger also provides bags at the kiosk.
