Blush Face, Edgar Clinks, Castle of Genre – Champion Brewing, Thursday

This is not your typical, brewery band and that’s a very good thing.

Blues Brothers Tribute Show – Hardywood, Friday

There are 106 miles to Chicago, we have a full tank of gas, half a pack of cigarettes, it’s dark and we’re wearing sunglasses.

An evening of live performances of the entire legendary Blues Brothers movie soundtrack and classic soul favorites played alongside a screening of the film in the Hardywood Park Craft Brewery taproom.

Performed by members of NO BS! Brass BandThe Flavor ProjectThe Blue TipsKINGS and RVA Tonight with Beau Cribbs‘ Studio 804.

Shamrock the Block – The Boulevard, Saturday

Get ready to gather on the Boulevard with thousands of your closest friends wearing green shirts that have pithy phrases created by the folks of Spencer’s, Target, and Old Navy. I honestly don’t see the fun of this particular festival but I’m in the minority because it seems nearly everyone in Richmond will be there. Enjoy.

It all kicks off THIS SATURDAY at noon on the Boulevard in Scott’s Addition. Check out the music from Totally Random and Jackass Flats on the City of Richmond DPU Stage. Plus, delicious food, tasty drinks, and fun for everyone! More details here: http://shamrocktheblock.com/

Tattoo Giveaway – Väsen Brewing Company, March 17th – 31st

I’ve got tattoos for me they’re a fairly personal decision and most have some deeper meaning to me. So getting a free tattoo of what is inarguably a cool well-done mural isn’t up my alley but perhaps you’ve eyed the mural and thought it would look good somewhere on your body. The contest kicks-off this Saturday.

Väsen Brewing Company and River City Tattoo have teamed up to give away a free tattoo of our Reindeer in our taproom!

Here’s how to enter…

Starting on 3/17, snap a photo of yourself in front of our mural, check in on facebook, and attach the photo to your check-in. You can post up to one photo/day through 3/31. The person with the most photo check-ins at the end of the campaign will get a free tattoo of our mural compliments of River City Tatoo and Väsen.

In the event that there is a tie, the winner will be chosen randomly from that group.

Irish Drinking Songs Sing-Along Party – Twisted Craft Ales, Saturday

This is a St. Patrick’s Day event that I can get behind. If you catch me signing I apologize ahead of time.

What’s more fun than belting out Irish drinking songs with your friends?

From 7-8:30 Addison Liming will lead us in song with her guitar. Most of the songs will be about whiskey, but we don’t mind.

8:30 – 10 sing along to pre-recorded Irish drinking songs with famous groups like The Dubliners and The Clancy Brothers.

Order delivery or bring an Irish picnic.

St. Patrick’s Celebrations – O’Toole’s Pub, Thur-Sat

This little neighborhood bar just across the Nickel Bridge knows how to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day. They turn it into a three-day party. Thursday is St. Practice Day with live music. Friday is a Traditional Irish Wake music starts at  11:30 from Rocky Guttmann, Press Gang, Pipers, John Featherston Band. Saturday is of course the big day, St. Patrick’s Day with the fun kicking off again at 11:30 AM and going until they close.

At all these events expect sing-alongs, lots of Guinness, loud conversation, and some traditional fare. The smart move it to grab a seat at the bar and ride it out for the duration. It will be very crowded those with enochlophobia should stay far away.

BEER NEWS

The Castle Gets Bigger

Castleburg Brewing had broken down the wall and expanded next door. I haven’t swung by next door but it looks like it about doubles their seating space. It’s nice to see the little guys are getting bigger despite all the serious competition.

DRINK THIS

Defenestrator Release – Ardent, Thursday

The Cask is one of my favorite spots to enjoy a beer, so I imagine they’ll make a good beer as well. We can all find out on Thursday.

Defenestrator is an annual collaboration brewed with our friends fromThe Cask Cafe. This ruby brown doppelbock has a malty aroma and mild fruity notes. Defenestrator’s clean, full-bodied mouthfeel complements the nutty flavor with malty, bready sweetness that finishes crisp for an easy-drinking, mellow doppelbock.

8.7% ABV
22 IBU

Defenestrator will be available on draft and in crowler & growler fills to go.

Dragon Storm Belgian Dubbel Release – Castleburg Brewing, Saturday

As part of their celebration of the new space, they’ve got a new beer.

Home brew collaboration with Mike Drago, from the Mentoring Advanced Standards of Homebrewing (M.A.S.H.), Dragon Storm is an award-winning home brew. Brewed at Castleburg Brewery with Head Brewer,Karl Homburg and Assistant Brewer Joshua Starliper.

A Belgian-Style Dubbel, this beer was brewed with tettnang, galena and styrian goldings hops and Belgian malts. It’s a copper colored brew that has the aroma of toasted bread, caramel and raisins.

Dragon Storm will give you a storm of flavors, including the interplay of malts, caramel, figs, molasses and spicy pepper.

Into the Ether IPA Release – Final Gravity, Friday

Is Lakeside trying to become the new Capital of IPA in Richmond? Personally, I’m a fan of dueling IPAs, although it’s less of a war and more a big party. A chance to let another one in the door this Friday.

Good friend and homebrew extraordinaire, Joel Miller, spent a day in the brewery with Tony a couple weeks ago concocting this 6% IPA with Mosaic, El Dorado, and Citra hops. Breathe it in. It’ll take you to your happy place.
